Some people are happy with the postcard. But to find a frame that truly reflects the soul of a place you have to be willing to pay the price in dirt, sweat and - if you drive a Land Rover - some mechanical failure too!
I’m Cliff, a documentary photographer and explorer. On this channel, I share adventure-led films from the front seat of a '97 Defender. My partner Mon and I travel across continents, using the world as a laboratory for understanding visual impact.
This channel is for:
Adventurers seeking the raw, the wild and the real beyond the city limits.
Photographers tired of gear reviews, composition rules and looking for a bit of real world inspiration.
My work is underpinned by two decades of cognitive psychology and travel photography. I decode the hardwired reasons why certain images capture and hold our attention, helping you find the signal in your own work.
Join us on our next horizon.

2 years in the dirt in pursuit of photography.
This month I'm so stoked to announce that 5 of those moments were recognised by the world. The five images here are finalists in the Africa Geographic Photographer of the Year 2026. I love this continent for its rawness, and I'm proud to be part of such a stunning collection.

Sully - our Defender - is now back in the UK and we are excited to get going on more trips. We need to sort out the vehicle before we can do that so things may be a bit quiet on here for a bit but we will be back soon with more Photographic Adventures...
We can't wait! 📸

How do you create strong photographs?
In the latest film I break down 5 frames from our Trans-Africa expedition. It’s not a gallery tour; it’s a clinical dissection of why these images work.
If you’ve followed composition tutorials in the past but your photos still feel "flat," this one is for you.
In the film, I talk about photography from a science-backed POV, across different genres: from street-to-wildlife, landscape-to-drone. We'll look at it all.
I make the hidden, visible (see image 2), bringing to life the hardwired signals that underpin powerful photographs.

I almost didn't make this film.
When you tell people you are overlanding through Turkiye, they expect the postcard. They expect the sunsets over the Bosphorus and the thousands of hot air balloons drifting over Cappadocia. We saw that. It's beautiful.
But as a photographer, the "postcard" is a trap. It’s the Turkiye everyone knows, not the one you discover.
So, we did the opposite of what the guidebooks tell you to do.
We took Sully (our Defender) and drove 2,000 miles east. Away from the tourists, away from the resorts. We pushed into the hand-carved, terrifying drops of the Dark Canyon, skirted the freezing flanks of Mount Ararat, and ended up in the ancient borderlands near Syria.
This week’s video is an experiment. It’s not a normal travel vlog. It’s a film made almost entirely of still photographs (with some 2.5D parallax thrown in as well).
Grab a coffee, sit back and come with us into the hidden side of Turkiye.

I've found photographers get very hung up about 'storytelling' in their images.
My article in Full Frame explores why this is the wrong goal for the medium. I'm planning on making a video about this at some point - interested?

It’s been a month since I last updated you on Sully, and honestly, it’s been a bit of a nightmare. A shipping admin mess-up has led to delay-after-delay (add in a few more delays).
We’ve been going a bit stir-crazy in the driveway 😤 but we’re finally being told we’re almost there. 🤞
We can't wait to get back into the Defender, do some work on him, and hit the road again - sharing our photography adventures with you.
In the meantime, being stuck without a vehicle has allowed me to look closer at the photography component. The latest film is a result of that — mixing the raw energy of our time in *South Africa* with a simple psychological shift to help you capture more meaningful photos, no matter where you are.
*You can catch the film here:* https://youtu.be/9CRJw5p1fzk
🤞 it won't be long till we are back on new adventures!

The Price of the Shot” is live.
For years we’ve lived out of our Land Rover, Sully, searching for something more than a postcard.
This film - about our time in Southern Africa - isn’t just about photography; it’s about the obsession required to find a frame that lasts long after the light fades.
Watch it now: https://youtu.be/cS9xVeyF0-w
After watching, I’d love to know: Which of these "prices" were worth paying? The 1,000 miles of dirt? The days of earning trust? Or something else?

The soul of a continent isn't found in a postcard
But to find a frame that holds that weight, you have to pay the price in dirt & sweat... and the odd mechanical failure too!
Our upcoming film, "The Price of the Shot" documents the final six months of our Trans-Africa expedition. From the silence of the Angolan desert to the vertical mud-tracks of Lesotho that nearly took the Land Rover over the edge.
We pushed to the absolute limit to capture six meaningful frames. Coming this Friday (1st May, 16h00 GMT).
Are you willing to pay the price the lens demands?

After overlanding for 2 years my approach to photography has changed. It has nothing to do with the gear you use. Or about trying to tell a ‘story’. But about understanding human psychology.
In my guest op-ed on PetaPixel, I break down the power in understanding how our brain’s are actually hardwired to respond to images.

Let me know your thoughts in the comments — this one is triggering some heated debates in the gear forums.

Sully is still out in the Atlantic somewhere. 🚛💨
While our Land Rover is in transit, we are figuring out where our first major UK photographic expedition should be to. The goal for this series isn't just travel; we’re looking for the most challenging, atmospheric environments in the country to photograph and put our *Visual Intelligence* framework to the ultimate test.
Where should we point the ‘mobile laboratory’ first?
Vote below and tell us your favourite hidden, moody spot in that region in the comments. We’re looking for the wildest most photogenic corners of the UK.

Where is Sully? 🌍 🚛
A few of you have messaged asking why Sully (our Land Rover) has been missing from the last few videos… and why the background is distinctly not African! 😂
Our Trans-African adventure came to a close recently and in all the chaos of returning to the UK and getting our feet back under the table, we forgot to say anything. 🤦♂️ But don’t worry; Sully is currently on his way back across the ocean (in a shipping container).
While we wait for him to touch down on UK soil, we’re busy dreaming up and planning a whole new chapter of photographic expeditions across the UK and Europe. This ‘mobile laboratory’ is just getting started.
In the meantime, the photography doesn't stop. I’m deep in the Peak District right now filming the next masterclass in the Visual Intelligence series. And stay tuned for an upcoming Southern Africa compilation. The editing is an epic and keep the adventure-vibes high whilst we wait to be back on the road again properly!
Sully will be back in the frame soon. And we can’t wait for our next adventure
