Prime Minister Mark Carney is launching Canada's first national sovereign wealth fund, named the Canada Strong Fund. The strategic logic behind it is sound, argues Christopher Collins, a fellow at Royal Roads University, but the fiscal logic deserves more discussion. #CdnPoli #Canada

The Liberal government’s spring economic update is framed as the next step of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s promise to keep Canada’s economy on solid footing despite the geopolitical earthquakes set off by the Trump administration.
Called “Canada Strong for All,” the update sets out new spending since the fall budget: $54.5-billion over six years. Much of that new spending includes recent multibillion-dollar announcements such as boosting the GST credit and a short-term break on gas taxes.
Polls suggest the Carney government is still riding high in the minds of voters, but at the same time, they want to see more action on domestic affordability issues. #Canada #SpringEconomicUpdate #CdnPoli

There used to be so many Bathurst caribou in the NWT that their hoofbeats sounded like thunder. But now scientists are stumped by the herd's mysterious disappearance.
As an entire generation of Indigenous children is grow up without any connection to the vital caribou, a Dene-led program is trying to find answers.
The program’s methodology is to “do as hunters do,” which is to watch everything and listen to what the land is telling you.
The stakes couldn't be higher for the Dene traditional way of life, which can't survive without caribou.
“The elders have always said that if we respect the caribou and speak positively about them, they will return,” says Jocelyn Zoe, one of the program monitors.
Pat Kane profiled the program for our Underexposed photojournalism series aimed at shedding light on hidden corners of Canada. Read the full story and explore the project at tgam.ca/Underexposed #NWT #caribou #Dene #Canada

Forced to flee Ecuador for Toronto, he continues to build the refuge he once sought. “The church should be community. Not institution. Family. Not institution.” says Father Astudillo.

The Athabasca glacier in Alberta's Rocky Mountains is one of the many natural wonders vanishing before our eyes. But as more 'last-chance' tourists flock to see it before it's gone, some smaller guide companies are taking a new approach: low-footprint tours that make a difference, keeping Indigenous knowledge and the climate crisis at the forefront.

Punk is not dead in this New Brunswick bar. There is no sign above the door, but Haven Music Hall in Saint John is always packed on a Saturday night. And for the city's thriving music scene, powered by its working-class roots, punk is like folk music.
