Internationally regarded as one of the world’s finest live draws, Fat Freddy's Drop hail from Aotearoa New Zealand, South Pacific. Hi-tek soul pirates, resolutely independent. Founded in the club scene in Wellington in 1999, Freddys sound draws inspiration from almost every part of the black music lexicon. Soul drenched vocals and jazz harmonies collide with tape delays and echo chambers, underpinned by a rhythm section as comfortable laying down a throbbing, techy soundscape as they are a swampy blues stomp. It’s a potent mixture of virtuosity and diaphragm-wrecking digital sonics.
Fat Freddy's Drop : Joe Dukie aka Dallas Tamaira - Vocals, Dobie Blaze aka Iain Gordon – Keyboard, Chopper Reeds aka Scott Towers - Saxophone, Tony Chang aka Toby Laing – Trumpet, Conway Jeune aka C-Way Green – Guitar and MC Slave aka Mark Williams. Rhythm section present Cory Champion - Drums, Johnny Lawrence - Bass. DJ Fitchie aka Chris Faiumu – MPC, Producer (1999-2025).

Soulful delivery; Joe Dukie aka Dallas Tamaira dug deep for a kōrero with John Campbell on RNZ about Freddy’s being awarded 2026 Charts Icon taonga by Recorded Music NZ. Covering Freddy’s journey, the mahi, honouring MU the star by which we navigated and our BOATS 21st Anniversary voyages. Wonderment and gratitude. Meanwhile… we've just been announced as 2026 Aotearoa Charts Icon by Recorded Music NZ, a taonga acknowledging our success in the Official Aotearoa Music Charts over the course of Freddy’s career.
‘It's humbling for the entire Freddy's band and wider whānau to see the impact this music has had on so many people for such a long time. We've had incredible support from our listeners since the very beginning - people are on to their 5th, 6th, 11th copy of some of our records because they've either played them so much they're totally thrashed, or have gifted their copies to others. Our audience has really connected with our philosophy of pressing up vinyl too. It's something we've always believed in - having something real and significant you can feel as well as hear.
We have to thank all our partners - designers, mastering engineers, record pressing plants, marketing and communications teams, distributors, retailers - across the board for their support over the years too. Kia ora.’

Sweet as; Based On A True Story is #1 on the Top 20 Aotearoa Albums Vinyl chart (2003-2026) by Recorded Music NZ. Freddy’s also clocks in at #17 for BAYS and #20 for Blackbird. Stoked, thanks Aotearoa. Vinyl’s always been our high rotation. ”A big fat piece of vinyl shows off the substantial work that goes into making an album" MU explained when we were shipping out SLO MO vinyl. Arohanui.
