Y’all might know me as La Doña but my legal first name is Cecilia Cassandra. My mama gave me Cassandra after having hella dreams about the name; when she looked up the significance of the name she saw that Cassandra was a prophetess and decided she better heed her dreams. I’ve been feeling súper crazy these days, looking out over my city and seeing it hella empty. The refrain from Cuando Se Van repeats over and over in my head: “Sueño con terremotos, la ciudad pa nosotros, sueño con temblores, y ellos se van.” I thought the next crisis we would experience together would be the earthquake but it looks like it is this virus. I picked up homegirls from the airport a couple weeks ago and I seen hella frisco people coming home and hella tech folx leaving and my head screamed “¿Bahia donde vayas? No eres nada sin tu gente, quizás algún día ellos regresarán.” I don’t know how to process this all quite yet but I know that this song has been my inadvertent shelter in place soundtrack, I can’t get it out of my head. I am wishing you all strength and peace and safety and holding you in a tight embrace of love. I know that we will be able to organize and mobilize and realize a better reality for ourselves and our city and our world when the fog of this pandemic clears. I expected to be able to be able to get hyphy with my people on 415 day but since we will still be sheltering in place I would like to offer my official Cuando Se Van music video to you all on that day, 4/15. Until then please enjoy this live session of Cuando Se Van we filmed at the YouTube studios in New York. I miss my band but when I watch this I can remember the joy I have in playing with los cuates and for all of you 💚💚
