Grace Pearl Ingalls was born on May 23, 1877, in Burr Oak, Iowa—the youngest sister of Laura Ingalls Wilder. While Laura’s stories captured the spirit of the frontier, Grace lived it in her own quiet, devoted way.
Grace grew up alongside her sisters Mary, Carrie, and Laura, weathering storms both literal and personal. She became a schoolteacher after studying at Redfield College and taught in the town of Manchester, just seven miles from her family in De Smet. In 1901, she married William Dow, a local farmer, and though they never had children of their own, Grace filled her life with purpose.
She later worked as a local newspaper correspondent and, more importantly, became a caregiver—devoting years to her blind sister Mary after their parents passed. While her sister Laura wrote of prairies and hardships, it’s said that Grace quietly helped her remember the details that made those pages come alive. Wildflowers. Hillsides. Home.
In 1932, Grace fell ill with severe diabetes and spent her final years in frail health. Carrie, always nearby, visited her in the hospital and brought a copy of Little House in the Big Woods to read aloud. Grace passed away in 1941 at age 64.
She may not have written the books, but she lived the life they honored.

Amazing weekend in Greenfield, IN. My birthday is 9/11, same as episode 1 premiere day. I set a goal to try my best to attend a meet and greet w/Miss Karen Grassle before the show and I turn 51 on Thursday. I wasn’t sure if it would work out but then the stars aligned. I have attended events in MO before w/many other members of the cast so Alison and Dean being there as always is icing on the (birthday) cake. Thank you to all for being so gracious with your time. And I loved meeting so many fans from the meet and greet to the evening dinner.
