Dr. Levi Cowan creates videos discussing tropical cyclones in the Atlantic Ocean, explaining potential scenarios for active storms and how they may impact people. Levi has a Ph.D. in meteorology from Florida State University. Please note that these updates do not reflect the official forecasts of the National Hurricane Center, and should not be interpreted as such. When tropical storms exist in the Atlantic or eastern Pacific, official NHC information can be found at www.hurricanes.gov. Please refer to the NHC when making decisions, and heed the advisories and evacuation statements of your local National Weather Service office and emergency management officials.

Tropical Tidbits

🌀 The trailing end of an old frontal boundary off the southeastern US is providing an opportunity for tropical development.

🌀 A broad circulation is developing east of Jacksonville, and will move up into #SouthCarolina early Sunday. Fortunately, moderate wind shear imposed by an upper-level trough is expected to keep the system broad and asymmetrical, preventing significant strengthening. However, a subtropical or tropical depression could briefly form this weekend.

🌀 The primary impact will be potentially heavy rains along coastal #SouthCarolina and #NorthCarolina. Due to the asymmetric nature of the system, keeping the heaviest rains offshore, the NWS Weather Prediction Center predicts only a marginal risk for excessive rainfall and flooding, but keep an eye on your local NWS forecast.

The Atlantic hurricane season is off to a quiet start in June, with vertical shear remaining unfavorably high for storm development this week in the main development region. An MJO event originally forecast to propagate into the Atlantic during late June now appears unlikely to do so, making it unclear when the first window of opportunity for tropical storm development will be just yet.

The eastern Pacific is unfortunately off to a comparably strong start, with Category 3 Hurricane Erick making landfall in southern Mexico today. Hoping everyone in the impacted region stays safe.

There won't be another video on Hurricane #Ida today. The storm has intensified tremendously overnight, and the worst-case scenario for southeast Louisiana is now unfolding. My heart goes out to everyone in the path. The forecasting is over, and it's about immediate impacts to people now. My role to play fades quickly near the time of landfall. Folks should follow NWS New Orleans and local officials for relevant information. Please stay safe everybody.

I'm unable to post a video update tonight, but we'll be tracking newly-formed TD28 for a few days yet. Compared to Friday, we have greater confidence that TD28 won't move toward south Florida, but will move toward the Yucatan Peninsula & eventually the north gulf coast. Monitor and be prepared. The summary of possible impacts from NHC (see below) does a good job this evening.

Due to travel, there will be no video update tonight, but at this point the best information you can get is from your local NWS offices and county officials regarding hazards in your local area as Hurricane Isaias nears landfall. Remember that hazards from wind and flash flooding will extend well inland from the coast as Isaias moves through the Carolinas and into the Mid-Atlantic tonight and tomorrow. Stay safe all.
