Welcome to my astrophotography channel your GOTO Channel for everything Astrophotography, from tutorials on how to image the night sky to repairs and modifications to your astro equipment.
Astrophotography is a complexed hobby and can put some people off this beautiful hobby but I've put together some inspirational videos for you to learn the art of taking Incredible pictures of the night sky.
I am a complete gear head so this hobby keeps me very happy. I love a mod or two especially if it improves things or is a more affordable solution. I share what I know from simple things like cable management and making a dew shield all the way up to building my own roll off roof observatory. I always answer questions as best I can so please feel free to reach out.

Open vs Closed Ecosystems in Astrophotography
One of the biggest discussions in astrophotography right now is whether a closed ecosystem like ASIAir is better, or whether open systems that support equipment from multiple manufacturers are the future.
Neither approach is right or wrong. A closed ecosystem can offer a very polished, simple experience, while an open ecosystem gives more flexibility and freedom of choice.
I’ve just published a video looking at the Stellarmate/ToupTek approach and how it compares with the ASIAir.
📺 Watch here: https://youtu.be/NKysRvFUKl0
I’m interested in your thoughts:
🔭 Do you prefer the simplicity of a closed ecosystem, or the flexibility of an open one?
And has your opinion changed over the last few years?

Following a great suggestion by KevinRudd I have screwed on one of Altairs filter drawers on to the thread I showed fitting a 2” filter. I didn’t have an adapter or correct thread to reattach the original dew shield but just added an extension piece to give the filter a little protection from dew and stray light from the sides. Now I can swap filters in and out far easier, great idea. What do you think?

🌌 The PAS Show Is This Weekend – And You Don’t Want to Miss It!
4
The Practical Astronomy Show is back this weekend — and if you’re even remotely obsessed with telescopes, nebulae, mounts, cameras, or just staring up at the night sky… this is your place.
Here’s why you should absolutely make the trip:
🔭 1. Get Hands-On With The Gear
This isn’t scrolling spec sheets online. This is touch it, test it, compare it. From premium refractors to harmonic mounts, cooled astro cameras to filters — you can see it all in one room. If you’re thinking about upgrading, this could save you from making a very expensive mistake.
🎤 2. Learn From The Experts
Top astrophotographers, solar imagers, planetary specialists and industry insiders sharing real-world experience. No fluff. Just practical advice you can actually use the next clear night.
🤝 3. Meet Your Tribe
Astrophotography can be a lonely hobby at 2am in a freezing field. PAS is the opposite. It’s buzzing with people who get it — guiding woes, tilt nightmares, unexpected meridian flips… all of it.
💸 4. Show Deals & Insider Access
Manufacturers often bring exclusive offers, bundle deals and sometimes early looks at new kit. If you’ve been hovering over the “buy” button… wait until the show.
🌠 5. Get Inspired Again
Sometimes you don’t need new gear — you just need new motivation. Seeing incredible images, hearing stories from fellow astrophotographers, and being surrounded by the community can completely reignite that spark.
If you’ve been on the fence about going — take this as your sign.
Clear skies, great conversations, dangerous levels of gear temptation… what more do you want?
See you there 👊 practicalastroshow.com/

oops - An apology after my recent video release. Unfortunately once posted youtube do not allow any changes or edits hence this post.
Capture of The Headphone nebula. Jones Emberson 1 or PK164+31.1
I mistakingly referred to this earlier as IC2177 after searching for The Headphone nebula and some confusion emerging as the head of the Seagull Nebula is sometimes called the headphone nebula too.
My image is of the planetary nebula and apologies for my lack of Astronomy knowledge and confusion, we live and learn.
If you would like to see a detailed image of The Headphone Nebula it is on my Astrobin along with other images I have acquired.
