#ThrowbackThursday – Arrested for Speeding (March 1925)

Do you know that the Founder of Foursquare, Aimee Semple McPherson, was once arrested for over-speeding?

One Thursday night in early 1925, after a full day of ministry, Sister Aimee Semple McPherson and her mother, Minnie, set out for a brief drive to the beach. While discussing ideas for her next sermon at Angelus Temple—where over 5,000 would gather—they were suddenly stopped by police. Aimee had been driving 31 mph in a 20 mph zone.

Though briefly shaken, the moment sparked divine inspiration. That Sunday, she preached a now-legendary sermon titled “Arrested for Speeding.” Using her recent experience, she illustrated how God places “traffic officers” in our lives—conscience, parents, pastors, and circumstances—to keep us from speeding past the cross of Christ.

The message, first delivered in March 1925 and reprised several times in later years, reminds us even today: sometimes, a divine interruption is exactly what we need to get back on the right road.
