Saw a Marvin Redpost book in a little free library today & it triggered a memory for me that there were a lot of gender-bending children's books out there between that and the Todd Strasser "Help I'm Trapped" series doing at least three gender swaps. I'm sure these weren't the only ones either.

Could be a good premise for a video, but I'm probably not the right person to make it if there are any queer/trans book reviewers who are looking for a video idea. Why was this such a thing in middle grade books?

Have an idea for a video, what are some books that traumatized y'all as a kid?

I'm baaaaack! Did a wrap-up video last week! And I've got something in the works right now, a little reminiscent of my older book reviews. Watch this space.

The Best Reading Advice I Was Ever Given:

The best advice regarding books/reading I ever got was from a librarian, specifically the one who worked at my high school's library. I spent practically every day in there my freshman year because they gave me a criminally early lunch period (like we had staggered arrival because the school had so many students, it was like the default local high school so I started 3rd period and my lunch was 4th period, you know like 2 hours after I would have eaten before I left my house which would have to then last me another 6 hours but i digress, my issues with how my school handled scheduling could be its own post)

Personally I think she was just trying to get me to stop using the computers/reading manga so much but one day I was just browsing aimlessly when she asked me if I wanted a recommendation. I told her that I'd take one and that I liked sci-fi. She recommended Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card to me, which I wasn't sold on based on the cover, but she told me to give it 30 pages or three chapters, and I did.

Now, I know that Orson Scott Card is a racist, homophobic neoconservative chud, but his views weren't as well known back then, and I do remember enjoying the book and she was right with her estimation of three chapters/30 pages being a good indicator of whether you'll know if you're liking a book. And if you liked Ender's Game but want something not written by an asshole, might I recommend Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan Saga, which is similar in premise and tone but the author is, as far as I can tell, a lovely person.

Tacked on the recommendation because I felt like paying it forward. My librarian suggested a book for me, and I suggested a book for you!

My collection of Superman tie-in novels to celebrate the new movie coming out which I haven't seen yet, but I'm going to see ASAP. Who knows. Might fuck around and make a SUPER book recommendation video if that might interest people.

First horror book of the season. Thought it was a really good subversion of the classic slasher tropes and at only 131 pages it's a good appetizer before I dig into something heavier.
