FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) is the international governing body for association football (soccer), futsal, and beach soccer. It oversees international competitions, sets rules, and promotes the game worldwide. It is one of the world's oldest and largest NGOs, with 211 member associations today.
Founding (1904).
FIFA was founded on May 21, 1904, in Paris, France. Seven national associations from continental Europe established it: Belgium, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. Germany joined the same day by telegram but is not counted as a founding member.
The British associations (England, Scotland, etc.) initially declined to join, as they preferred to maintain their influence separately. England joined in 1906. The first president was Frenchman Robert Guérin (1904–1906), a journalist who played a key role in its creation.
