This is Serena, my youngest daughter. These were taken right after I received full custody of all four of them (my daughters). She is now 8 years old, going on 18.

She woke up crying last night from a bad dream. She says I died in her dream, and she thought it happened in real life. It took several hours for her to calm down, and to be reassured that Daddy isn’t going anywhere any time soon.

But it got me to thinking about the very real possibility of me being taken away from them at any moment, and I began to reassess my priorities.

I’ve been so caught up with trying to create a better life for them, that I’d been neglecting to take the time to actually live with them. So focused on responsibility, that I wasn’t really focused on relationship. And that bothered me.

Nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing, means more to me in this world than being their father. Not fame, not fortune, not status, nothing. I may be called to carry on my father’s legacy, and I will continue to do that with all that I am. But my highest calling is, and will always be, being a father to my children.

I thank God for blessing me with them. I pray that one day, they will each thank God for blessing them with me. And the only way that happens is for me to shift my focus. Yes, responsibilities are of the utmost importance. That’s our job as fathers. But relationships are at the core of what’s important to them, and I’d do well to remember that.
