The 0.3-Second Discipline ⏱: Why Gaming Isn’t a Waste of Time🎮

I almost gave up.

Over the weekend, I found myself in a high-level area of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. I’d skipped the high-tier enemies to go straight for the loot, only to end up staring down a boss that, by all rights, should have crushed me.

My only edge? A 0.3-second parry window (a traumatic skill I can only credit to years of Souls games).

For two hours, it was just me and the parry button. If I was off by a fraction of a second, it was game over. The intensity was so high my hand actually started cramping—I had to switch hands mid-fight just to keep the rhythm.

At one point, the doubt crept in: "Is this a waste of time? What if I fail and these hours are just gone?"

Then, the victory screen hit. 1.1 million damage dealt. 444 successful parries. The dopamine hit was incredible, but the realisation afterwards was even better.

The Corporate "Boss Fight"

In my line of work, results don't always come immediately. You can spend months on a project before you see the "Victory" screen. Gaming, however, provides an immediate feedback loop for the exact skills we use in the office , Strategic Planning, Adaptive Execution: Staying calm and switching tactics (or hands!) when things get physical and extreme Focus: Sustaining a 0.3-second reaction time 444 times in a row. That is perfecting a skill through pure repetition.

I’ve realized that gaming isn’t a "waste of time" if you use it to sharpen your reflexes for life. The hobby isn't the issue; the issue is whether or not you translate that skill into your real-world goals. It does give me confident to do everything else afterwards.

How you play a game is often how you do everything else. If you can stay disciplined through 444 parries, you can stay disciplined through any dream you’re willing to achieve. The difference is how clearly you can see the end reward.
