Some weekends feel like more than a weekend.

Episode 51 of Still Here, Still Trying starts with hockey, sore knees, and a fundraiser for the Inland Northwest Girls Hockey Foundation, but it moves into something deeper.

This one is about Memorial Day, playing with my son Jacob, watching kids from the rink grow up, missing my mom, thanking my dad for serving, remembering my grandpas who served and came home, and asking what we’re doing with the life still in our hands.

I don’t think Memorial Day asks us to stop laughing, playing, gathering, or enjoying the life in front of us.

I think it asks us to enjoy it with our eyes open.

I had the honor of joining Steve Ramona on Doing Business with a Servant’s Heart, and this conversation hit a lot of the places I care about most.

We talked about healthcare, servant leadership, optimism, creativity, burnout, self-care, community health centers, and what it means to keep showing up when life gets heavy.

One of the biggest things we talked about was this:

You have to take care of yourself if you want to keep serving other people well.

That sounds simple, but leaders forget it all the time. Parents forget it. Caregivers forget it. People with huge hearts forget it. We push, carry, fix, lead, support, and smile through it until there’s nothing left in the tank.

For me, creativity became part of how I found my way back. Music. Art. Writing. Podcasting. Taking the noise in my head and giving it somewhere to go. That has made me a better leader, husband, dad, friend, and human.

We also talked about why I still believe healthcare could bring people together if we would let it. Community health centers exist for that reason. If you don’t have insurance, show up. If you’re scared, show up. If you’ve delayed care, show up. Your family needs you here.

And yes, we talked about The Optimist’s Way, realistic optimism, my podcast Still Here, Still Trying, and the idea behind “Borrow Mine.” If you don’t have enough hope today, borrow some from someone who does.

Huge thanks to Steve for the conversation and for creating space for people who believe business, leadership, and service still belong together.

Episode 50 is live.

Fifty episodes of Still Here, Still Trying. Fifty times sitting down with a mic, trying to say something honest about leadership, family, healthcare, grief, music, hope, and what it takes to stay human when the world keeps rewarding noise.

This one matters.

The Middle Has to Move is about the good people who are tired of the extremes, tired of the cruelty, tired of corruption getting excused when it helps the “right” side, and tired of watching serious issues get turned into slogans while real people pay the price.

I talk about running for office and how ugly it got. I talk about leadership and why it should never be about ego. I talk about Idaho, healthcare, women’s health, and how fringe politics makes it harder for people to do their jobs and care for human beings.

And I say this as clearly as I know how:

If decent people stay quiet, the loudest voices keep running the room.

So listen to the episode. Share it with someone who still believes character matters. Comment with the kind of community you want to help build.

Because the middle has to move.

And yeah, I mean us.

Community theater does more than put people on a stage. It gives a town a place to gather, feel something together, and remember that stories still matter.

In this episode of the Better Together Podcast by Heritage Health, I sit down with Brooke Wood, Executive Director of Lake City Playhouse, to talk about the role local theater plays in the health and wellbeing of Coeur d’Alene.

We talk about confidence, belonging, difficult stories, family connection, nonprofit challenges, and why the arts have such a powerful place in a healthy community.

I loved this conversation because it reminds us that health is bigger than a clinic visit. It includes the spaces where people find connection, meaning, joy, and healing.

If you love Coeur d’Alene, care about the arts, or believe strong communities need places where people can show up as themselves, this episode is worth watching.

Recovery is one of those topics people talk about from a distance, but Tess Reasor brings it close.

In this episode of the Better Together Podcast by Heritage Health, I sit down with Tess from 208 Recovery for a real conversation about addiction, mental health, relapse, fentanyl, family impact, and what long-term recovery support actually looks like here in North Idaho.

Tess brings honesty, lived experience, and a deep commitment to walking beside people when life gets hard. I’m grateful for her voice, her work, and the role 208 Recovery plays in our community.

If you care about recovery, love someone who is struggling, work in healthcare, or want to better understand what people are facing, this episode is worth your time.

I made two Mother’s Day songs this year, and this first one is the fun one.

Moms Are Magic is for the moms who somehow keep the whole world moving while everyone else is losing shoes, asking what’s for dinner, and forgetting the thing they were supposed to remember.

Funny, honest, full of love.

Happy Mother’s Day to the moms, grandmas, bonus moms, aunties, and all the women who help hold families together.

My second Mother’s Day song this year is called She Holds Up the World.

This one is more tender. It’s for my mom, the moms I’ve had in my life, and all the amazing women who show up in quiet ways every day.

A mom comes in many forms. The one who raised you. The one who loved you when you needed it. The one who encouraged you, protected you, corrected you, or helped you feel steady when life felt heavy.

We need them all.

Happy Mother’s Day. I hope this one finds the right hearts.

New episode of Still Here, Still Trying is up.

It’s called What People Need Most Right Now.

This one gets into something I think a lot of people are feeling but not always saying out loud: the world feels loud, people are tired, and a lot of us are carrying more than anyone realizes.

I talk about what happens when you stop feeling heard, how you start editing yourself just to make the room more comfortable, and why being truly heard can feel like shelter when everything else feels unstable.

I also close the episode with Feel Something Again from my new album Shut Out the Noise.

If you’ve been feeling overloaded, numb, stressed, or like you’ve been carrying more than you’ve been saying, I think this one will hit home.

I didn’t expect this one to come out the way it did… but I’m glad it did.
