Apollo Hospitals Chennai performs world-first Robotic VEIL (Video Endoscopic Inguinal Lymphadenectomy) surgery using the Hugo RAS™️ platform.
Primarily performed for penile cancer, and potentially applicable for vulval cancer, vaginal cancer, and melanoma, this milestone marks the first global use of the lateral approach on the Hugo RAS™️ platform.
Robotic surgery for inguinal lymph node removal is well established for cancers involving the lower limb and genital areas in men and women. Traditionally done by the open method, this surgery carries complications related to skin flap necrosis and lymph leak.
The lateral approach offers distinct advantages including a larger working field, single positioning of the robot, and much reduced skin issues, while requiring advanced understanding of both the surgery and the machine.
The procedure was led by Dr. N Ragavan, Senior Consultant – Urologist, Uro-Oncologist and Robotic Surgeon, Apollo Hospitals Chennai, assisted by Dr Madhav Tiwari, Consultant - Urologist, Uro-Oncologist and Robotic Surgeon, Apollo Speciality Hospitals, Teynampet, Chennai, who was instrumental in the planning and execution of the surgery, with anaesthesia support led by Dr. Pradeep Chiruvar. The patient made an excellent recovery.
