The mother of Rapper Yung Miami was at the mall with a male friend stealing high-end designer handbags from a Macy's department store. After fleeing the store, they drove off in a Chrysler 300 with the male friend driving and running through a stop sign. They collided with another car and killed the female driver and left her passenger in a coma. The male driver was arrested at the scene while Yung Miami's mama ran before being apprehended. The man that drove the getaway car faced multiple charges, including first-degree felony murder, armed robbery, vehicular homicide, and reckless driving. He was sentenced to life in prison. Yung Miami's mama accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to reduced charges. She was sentenced to five years in prison followed by 10 years of probation. She was released from prison in 2021.

This is truly disheartening and disappointing. Watching someone dismantle what we once cherished in the NBA, only to form another "super team" with a Hall of Famer, feels wrong. Justice has to look like justice, fair, unbiased, and consistent.

In Karmelo Anthony’s case, reports raised concerns that no juror selected looked like him, while all selected jurors were white. If that’s true, then how can we honestly say the process is impartial, especially when he’s accused of harming a white boy?

This isn’t about calling “these kids” bad. It’s about confronting what’s broken in our court system and what that means for our young people. When the system is biased, our kids don’t start the game on equal footing.

We don’t get to shrug and we don’t get to ignore racism, including racism that targets Black people. We have to demand better: real fairness, real representation, and real accountability.
