She taught humanity not with words but through actions.

Her hand was never raised to command; it was always extended to support.

Sadhanatai was the voice of calm and the warmth that brings people together.

She wasn’t just a companion in Baba Amte’s journey; she was a journey herself.

Today, on her Remembrance Day, we don’t just remember her; we carry forward her spirit of empathy and selfless dedication in all that we do.

June 21, 1951 — “A Forest of Bliss” Was Born.

On a barren, rock-strewn piece of land near Warora, where even the soil had given up hope, a few hearts came together to sow something that the world would remember for eternity.

It was Baba Amte with just ₹14, an injured cow, basic tools, his wife Sadhana, two little sons, and six leprosy patients.

With every hand that tilled the soil, every foot that stood firm, and every tear that watered the dream, MSS’s nucleus project – Anandwan was born.

Today, at the beginning of its 75th year, this forest of bliss sings the song of humanity.

With schools, hospitals, farms, art, machines, trees, and thousands of lives walking with their heads held high.

On this “Special Foundation Day,” marking the “Beginning of Anandwan’s Diamond Jubilee Year,” we stop with folded hands and full hearts and say: Thank You!

To every person, every struggle, every moment that shaped Anandwan.

From being a patch of earth to being the pulse of humanity — this journey has been sacred and humbling.

Leprosy patients have long faced deep social and emotional ostracisation, often viewed as symbols of broader mental, physical, and social injustices. Baba Amte’s engagement with these marginalized individuals was profoundly shaped by his experiences in youth as a film critic, a job that initially helped him manage his finances. His critiques, popular within the cinema community, led to friendships with Hollywood greats such as Norma Shearer and Greta Garbo, who affectionately addressed him as “yours sisterly.”

These connections proved pivotal when Baba shared the harsh realities of leprosy patients with Norma Shearer through heartfelt correspondence. He described the inhumane treatment they endured. Shearer’s initial shock at his choice of work — "Why are you taking up such dirty work?" — led Baba to reflect on a quote by G.K. Chesterton: “It is strange that men should see sublime inspiration in the ruins of an old church and see none in the ruins of a ‘Man’.” This helped him articulate the importance of recognising dignity in every human, even those ostracised by society. Shearer, deeply moved, not only apologised but also provided her first international aid to Maharogi Sewa Samiti, marking the start of what Baba called a “PAIN” friendship — a bond forged in the mutual recognition of suffering.

Baba understood that addressing the social stigma of leprosy was just as crucial as treating the physical symptoms of the disease. This insight inspired a new phase in his mission. He sought to empower individuals, showcasing their dignity and potential, challenging deep-rooted prejudices, and encouraging a collective effort to support those marginalized by society.

United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, and exactly 40 years later, Baba Amte became the first Indian to be honoured with the United Nations Human Rights Prize.

Baba Amte committed himself to advocating for the rights of the most marginalized individuals, which profoundly impacted countless lives. In 1988, he was awarded the prestigious "United Nations Human Rights Prize" for his outstanding contribution to human rights, presented on the 40th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Baba Amte received numerous national and international awards and recognitions throughout his life. However, this award has an impressive narrative that truly distinguishes it: Baba Amte was the “First Indian” to receive the United Nations Human Rights Prize and remains the “Only Indian” to have achieved this distinction!

Yet, there is a downside to this silver lining! Baba Amte, the first Indian citizen to receive this honour, was leading the second “Knit India Cycle March” during the award ceremony. Despite the Indian government’s eagerness as a matter of national pride, he expressed his inability to attend, showing his commitment to his cause. Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi then telephoned Dr Vikas, requesting he join him for the ceremony on the next morning's flight to the USA. This last-minute request led Dr Vikas to rush to Nagpur Airport, where he faced an unexpected hurdle: he didn’t have a ticket to New Delhi. When he explained that he urgently needed to purchase a ticket to New Delhi as he had to travel further with the Prime Minister, the staff humiliated him, accusing him of lying and denying him a ticket. With no means to contact the Prime Minister's Office, Dr. Vikas had no option but to return to Anandwan, feeling lost and defeated.

The unusual voyage began in 1951 when Baba and Sadhanatai Amte—started to dream of a world where leprosy would be an affliction that, instead of causing ostracism, would evoke a pledge to embrace and uplift those suffering from it. And thus, in a Central territory of India, they planted the seed of #Anandwan, "The Forest of Bliss," nurturing it into a harbour where the ravages of disease and discrimination melted away in a vibrant landscape of opportunity and respect.

Anandwan grew into a robust community where every individual was given a new lease on life, irrespective of physical challenges or society's discrimination. The guiding philosophy at the helm of this community is that people need opportunities, not charity, to shape their futures. In Anandwan, meaningful work gave every person a purpose and dignity.

Baba Amte defined Anandwan as #CHANCITY—a combination of Charity and Chance. Here, creativity married capability, growth and giving walked together, education opened the doors for expression, and the most positive change was brought about. Anandwan is a monument to human endurance and the strength of shared effort that affords everyone to innovate and lead self-sustaining lives.

Today, Anandwan continues to expand its impact. Fully fledged hospitals, communes for differently abled people, innovative water and agricultural practices, self-sustaining dairy, workshops for handlooms and 'artistry', and education of the underprivileged and the physically challenged are some of the many socio-economic activities conducted. Much more than a community, much more than an aggregation, this place represents a movement—a relentless pursuit of dignity and a guiding star that brings hope into countless lives.

Deep in the forests of #Gadchiroli District, #Maharashtra, the Lok Biradari Prakalp (LBP) in #Hemalkasa unfolds as a living narrative of compassion and resilience. Initiated by Baba Amte in 1973, LBP is one of the core project locations of Maharogi Sewa Samiti (MSS). It provides comprehensive healthcare to the Madia Gond tribe, a primitive community long isolated from modern medical services. Each recovery and life saved enriches the narrative of LBP’s compassionate mission.

Adjacent to the hospital, a school, and a junior college educate over 600 #tribal children, offering them not just academic instruction but also teachings about dignity and dreams. Here, these students are empowered to become the new voice of their community, equipped to forge a future brimming with possibilities.

Amte’s Animal Ark complements this human-centric mission by offering refuge to orphaned wildlife and maintaining ecological balance within the forest. This sanctuary cares for a range of animals, from snakes to leopards, fostering a profound respect for life in all its forms. It’s a tender tale of coexistence, reminding us of the delicate balance between humans and nature.

LBP embodies a journey of empathy, commitment, and transformative action in one of India’s most secluded environments. It empowers the Madia Gonds by integrating healthcare, education, and wildlife conservation, reducing the gap between isolation and societal participation. Every act of kindness and each initiative at LBP build a foundation of collective resilience, steering the community in the region toward a future of renewed hope.
