Most electricians were taught to press the 5 times button and assume that was required by the regs. But the 5 times test was never actually part of BS 7671. It came from the product standards that manufacturers use to prove RCD performance in a lab.

On site, your job is to prove safety, not speed. If the device trips within its rated time at 1x and the test button works, the device is safe to sign off.
