From the Lights of Hanukkah to the Walls of Jerusalem 🕯️🧱
Shavua Tov / A Blessed Week to you all.

We are entering a week that contains a special day on the Jewish calendar: The 10th of Tevet (Asara B’Tevet), a day of fasting and mourning. And a question arises in the heart: Just a moment ago, last week, we were lighting candles, singing, eating sweet donuts, and celebrating the great miracles of Hanukkah. How can we make such a sharp transition—from joy and light to a day of sadness and fasting?

📜 What are we mourning? The 10th of Tevet is the day the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar placed the siege around Jerusalem (First Temple era). The walls hadn’t fallen yet, the Temple was still standing, but the beginning of the destruction started there. There is a powerful life lesson here: We need to pay attention to the very first "crack," the beginning of a negative change, before it turns into a real destruction.

👑 The Story of Napoleon and Hope There is a famous story about Napoleon Bonaparte. He once walked through the streets on the night of Tisha B'Av (the day of the Temple's destruction) and saw Jews sitting on the floor in a dark synagogue, weeping. He asked, "What happened to them?" They answered: "They are mourning their Temple that was destroyed nearly 2,000 years ago." Napoleon stopped and said a chilling sentence: "A nation that mourns its past for so many years is guaranteed to see its future redemption."

🔥 The Secret of Rebbe Noson of Breslov But how do we cry without falling into depression? How do we remember the pain without giving up hope? Here enters the light of Rebbe Noson of Breslov (in Likutey Halakhot). He teaches us that the main point of Jewish mourning is not to get stuck in sorrow or the past. On the contrary—it is to awaken longing. The purpose of the tears is to break down the walls that surround our hearts and to re-awaken our hope and faith that we will see the rebuilding.

💡 Why did Hanukkah come first? This is the answer to our question. We cannot enter into mourning and "siege" without spiritual supplies. God gave us Hanukkah first—we charged our batteries with joy, with belief in miracles, with the knowledge that there is light even in the darkness. Only when our hearts are full of this strong faith can we approach the 10th of Tevet. We can mourn without falling into despair, because deep inside we know: Just as He performed miracles for our ancestors, He will do the same for us.

The mourning becomes a vessel for hope. We don't cry out of desperation, but out of a clear knowledge: "And You, with fire, will rebuild it."

May this fast be transformed into joy, and may we see the rebuilding of Jerusalem and peace in the world soon. Yitgadal V’yitkadash Shmei Raba! (May His Great Name be Sanctified).

The Power of the Eighth Day!

Have you ever felt that if you just had one more chance, one single moment where heaven's gates were completely open to you, you could change the course of your entire year?

If you are reading this, that moment is right now.

Most people look at today as just the end of Chanukah. The menorah is full, and life is about to go back to routine. But the deepest streams of Jewish tradition reveal that today—the 8th day, known as "Zos Chanukah"—is a pinnacle of spiritual opportunity.

Why is today different?

Our Sages explain that the number 7 represents the natural cycle of the world—the days of the week, the routine boundaries of nature. But the number 8? Eight represents stepping beyond nature. It is the spiritual power that breaks limitations and opens up possibilities that seem impossible by natural logic.

There is a profound Hasidic teaching that says: On this specific day, the distance between heaven and earth is removed. The gates of blessing are flung wide open for everyone equally. You don't need to be a great righteous person (a Tzaddik) or a scholar to connect today. The simplest heart has the same direct access as the greatest spiritual master.

This day is considered the final "seal" (Gmar Chatima) on the blessings for your upcoming year. It is the very last opportunity to draw down light and clarity before we move forward from the holiday.

So, I have a question for you: What are you going to do with this unique opportunity today?

Do not let this day pass like any other ordinary day. This is the moment to stop, disconnect from the noise, and pour out your heart for what you truly need.

Do not limit your prayers today to small things. This is the time to ask for the things that seem beyond nature:

Are you waiting for your soulmate (Zivug), a true connection? Ask for it today.

Do you need a breakthrough in your livelihood (Parnassah)? Ask for it today.

Are you praying for children, for health, for real peace in your home? Ask for it today.

The power of the "8"—the power above nature—is accessible right now to support you. The gates are open. All you have to do is open your heart and receive.

Shine bright. ✨
