“Keep going, even when it is dark, because the darkness doesn't last forever and the light will come. You have to step towards it.” – Annette Kelly, Darkness into Light Ambassador
Last weekend, communities across Belfast walked side by side at the annual Darkness into Light event, showing how connection, openness and shared purpose can help raise vital awareness of suicide prevention.
Organised by PIPS Suicide Prevention Ireland, the walk reminds us that prevention starts with compassion, visibility and standing together.
As part of the National Suicide Prevention Network, The Royal Foundation has supported PIPS in providing support when it is needed most by boosting the operating hours of their compassionate listening service and implementing a Friday Night Crisis Helpline.
The Princess of Wales and The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood visited Reggio Emilia in Italy this week to explore shared understandings and international approaches to early childhood development.
The trip focused on Reggio Emilia’s internationally recognised approach to early childhood education, which places relationships, environment and community at the centre of a child’s development. Specialist artist-educators guide children to express themselves and explore the world through paint, clay, movement, shadow, sound and play, helping them to remain connected to themselves and the world around them.
Across the two-day visit, Her Royal Highness spent time with local educators, families, and business leaders to see firsthand how the Reggio Emilia Approach to education is driven by children and prioritised by their community. The Princess took part in a range of activities including:
An immersive clay workshop at the Loris Malaguzzi Centre, the principal hub for the Reggio Emilia Approach to teaching
A tour of the REMIDA Creative Recycling Centre which finds creative and collaborative ways to use discarded items
And joined a child-led school assembly at Scuola Salvador Allende to see how nature-based learning is embedded into the Reggio Emilia Approach.
The two days also provided an opportunity to share the Shaping Us Framework, launched by the Centre in 2025, and further explore its connection to international approaches to social and emotional development. Find out more about the visit here: centreforearlychildhood.org/news-insights/news/the…
To mark the start of Mental Health Awareness Week, The Prince of Wales officially opened James’ Place Birmingham, seeing firsthand the vital support the charity’s newest centre provides to men in suicidal crisis.
James’ Place is a founding partner of The Royal Foundation’s National Suicide Prevention Network launched last October to transform suicide prevention across the UK. During the visit, The Prince learned more about how the charity delivers rapid, professional therapy that addresses the root causes of suicidal distress. He also met with staff, local partners and service users who have previously been supported by James’ Place at its other locations.
The Royal Foundation is supporting James’ Place to pilot two new satellite services in the North East and North West over the next 12 months, extending access to life-saving support where it’s needed most.
The visit also brought together fellow Network partners, including PAPYRUS, MindOUT and the National Suicide Prevention Alliance (NSPA), who shared how the Network are positively working together, observations and learnings from the first six months and ways the Network can continue to strengthen suicide prevention efforts nationwide.
This #InternationalWomensDay, we’re celebrating the extraordinary women who work with The Royal Foundation to help tackle some of society’s biggest challenges.
Partnerships and collaboration are at the heart of everything we do. Encouraging a culture of sharing - whether that’s advice, knowledge, resources or insight – means that together, we can help deliver meaningful change.
Today, we’re spotlighting some of the inspirational women across our programmes and projects. They share with us the work that they do, and the impact it has.
The digital postcards remind us how important it is to share life lessons, as Yansie, Iram, Hope and Tracey demonstrate why their work is so critical.
At The Royal Foundation, we’re proud to work alongside these inspirational women across all our programmes.
