Why O why, is this called good?
On the cross of Christ He took abuse.

Men, women, children alike,
Need a savior who’s good in God’s sight.

Christ the King of the Jews they wrote,
But crowned with thorns did pains He took.

On that tree He was thirsty and famished,
His body broken, bruised, and ravaged.

The sky grew dark in midday light,
As heaven watched that dreadful sight.

The spotless Lamb, no sin His own,
Bore wrath we earned before the throne.

Each lash that fell, each mocking cry,
Was love displayed as He would die.

The hands that healed were pierced through wood,
The feet that walked where sinners stood.

They gambled for His tattered seam,
Unknowing He fulfilled the scheme.

The veil was torn from top to base,
A way was made to enter grace.

The earth did quake, the rocks were split,
Creation groaned at what was writ.

Yet in that pain, a victory lay,
For death itself was stripped that day.

Why O why, call this good?
Because He did what none else could.

He drank the cup, He paid the cost,
To seek and save what once was lost.

So now we look upon that tree,
And find in death, true liberty.

With final breath, the work accomplished—
“It is finished.”
