HEALTHCARE ADDED 1 MILLION WORKERS SINCE 2020
The industry has added more than 1 million workers since March 2020 and, at the same time, thousands more healthcare jobs remain unfilled as demand for workers continues to far exceed the supply.
Healthcare faces significant workforce shortages despite substantial job growth with a ratio of 2.3 job openings for every hire indicating a persistent gap between demand for healthcare workers and the available labor supply. Home healthcare expanded, as more patients opted for care at home over nursing facilities, indicating a long-term shift toward outpatient and home-based care. Nursing and residential care facilities continue to struggle with workforce recovery ❤️🩹. New federal regulations requiring minimum care hours in nursing homes by 2027 which could further increase demand.

STEWARD HOSPITAL TO CLOSE 125 YR OLD NURSING SCHOOL 🏫
Due to complications from the Steward Health Care Chapter 11 Bankruptcy filing, the Sharon Regional Medical Center School of Nursing will not be starting January 2025 classes. The hospital's school of nursing opened in 1899 and graduated 25 students per year on average. Through partnerships with Penn State Shenango and Thiel College, students took nursing courses through the hospital-based diploma nursing program, and college level academic courses at one of the colleges.

LONG COVID PUSHED 1 MILLION OUT OF WORKFORCE
More than 5% of U.S. adults have long COVID, and it is most common for those in prime working years. The chronic condition occurs after a COVID-19 infection and lasts for at least three months, according to the CDC. Symptoms include difficulty concentrating, memory changes, fatigue and shortness of breath.
Among U.S. adults, 4.4% said long COVID has limited their activity, and 1.4% said it has significant limits on their activity.
The federal government classifies long COVID as a disability.

US WORKFORCE & POPULATION GROW OLDER: 4 TRENDS TO KNOW
1. Starting in 2008, the 65 and older demographic made up an increasingly larger portion of the U.S. population age 16 and older.
2. By 2023, those 65 and older became the largest share of the population ages 16 and older.
3. By 2023, those 65 and older made up the lowest proportion of the labor force, though their share increased from 2000 to 2019.
4. While the labor force participation rates of those in their prime working ages (25–64) have remained near their mid-1990s levels, the overall share of these individuals in the labor force has significantly fallen since the mid-1990s, driven by their smaller numbers.

WILL COVID-19 EVER GO AWAY??? EXPERTS ARE UNSURE 🫤🤷🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️
The CDC now considers COVID-19 to be endemic, though not all health experts agree with this classification. The CDC defines a pandemic as an epidemic that has spread over several countries or continents, usually affecting a large number of people. In contrast, an endemic is the constant presence and/or usual prevalence of a disease or infectious agent in a population within a geographic area.
Some epidemiologists argue COVID-19 is still too unpredictable to be labeled as endemic. Virus 🦠 epidemiologist expect it to take at least a decade for the virus to fall into a more predictable pattern.
At this point, COVID-19 can be described as endemic throughout the world 🌎.
Do you agree?

NEW LAW SHIELDS NURSES👩🏽⚕️ , PROMOTES MEDICAL ERROR REPORTING
Kentucky is the first and only state to decriminalize medical errors. HB 159 ensures that healthcare providers, including nurses, "shall be immune from criminal liability for any harm or damages alleged to arise from an act or omission relating to the provision of health services." It includes exceptions for negligence and intentional harm.
In 2022, RaDonda Vaught, a former nurse at Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt University Medical Center, was convicted for a fatal medication error she made while working as a nurse in 2017. Ms. Vaught lost her nursing license and was sentenced to three years of supervised probation.
In wake of the case, nurses and medical groups nationwide — including the American Nurses Association and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement — have called for systemwide workforce and safety reforms to focus on harm prevention, arguing that the criminalization of errors would discourage workers from reporting mistakes.

PATIENT DIES 😵 AFTER EMPLOYEE MISSED CLINICAL ALARMS 🚨
Last year, a patient at Aurora, Colo.-based Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center died after a hospital technician turned off their notification device. An investigation found a telemetry medical instrument technician missed several red alarms ‼️ concerning a patient's oxygenation levels. By the time clinicians arrived, the patient was "unresponsive and pulseless." A patient safety report was not filed for the patient's death ☠️. The investigation concluded that the delay in alarm notifications could have resulted in serious injury to the patient and possibly contributed to the patient's death. Due to the patient's comorbidities and complexity of care, investigators could not determine if the failures affected clinical care.
Investigators found a second instance where a patient experienced a cardiac event, but clinicians were unaware for hours due to the patient's alarm being turned off.
As a nurse, what has been your experience with clinical alarm fatigue?
