We educate a lifestyle that attempts to reduce an individual's or society's use of the Earth's natural resources, and one's personal resources. It is often called "earth harmony living" or "net-zero living". As a practitioner of this lifestyle, we often attempt to reduce the ecological footprint (including their carbon footprint) by altering their methods of transportation, energy consumption, and/or diet. And our aim to make peoples sustainable, naturally balanced, and respectful of humanity's symbiotic relationship with the Earth's natural ecology.

A few days ago, I had the opportunity to capture a video at Nannilam Eco Village focusing on the practical use of Kanban boards in agriculture.

Mr. Santhosh, Business Development Executive at Nannilam Eco Village, shared valuable insights on how Kanban systems are being adapted to lean farming practices. It was interesting to see how a concept widely used in manufacturing and operations is now playing a vital role in improving efficiency, transparency, and workflow management in farming.

Lean farming is not just a theory here—it’s being implemented on the ground with structured systems that help farmers plan, monitor, and optimize their activities effectively.

🎥 A detailed video on this will be released soon—stay tuned!

Another noteworthy initiative from Nannilam Eco Village is their “Own an Acre” model. This opens up an opportunity for individuals outside the farming community to become investors and be part of a sustainable agriculture ecosystem.

It’s encouraging to see such innovative models bridging agriculture, technology, and investment.

India Strengthens Banana Biodiversity Efforts with Launch of Field Gene Bank

In a significant push towards preserving agricultural biodiversity, the ICAR-National Research Centre for Banana has launched India’s first Banana Field Gene Bank, marking a major milestone in plant genetic conservation and sustainable agriculture.

The initiative aims to safeguard rare and indigenous banana varieties that are increasingly at risk due to changing farming patterns and declining cultivation interest.

The project was inaugurated by Trilochan Mohapatra, Chairman of the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights Authority, who emphasized the urgent need to protect genetic diversity in crops. He highlighted that structured conservation systems are critical to addressing the gradual loss of traditional varieties.

Under this initiative, farmers cultivating unique banana varieties can register with NRCB, enabling scientists to conserve, evaluate, and multiply these genetic resources for future agricultural use. The programme is designed not only to preserve biodiversity but also to facilitate large-scale utilization of valuable plant traits in modern farming systems.

Importantly, the initiative places farmers at the center of conservation efforts. Financial incentives and recognition are being offered to encourage participation. Farmer communities preserving rare varieties are eligible for awards of up to ₹10 lakh, while individual farmers can also receive financial support and national recognition for their contributions.

The gene bank aligns with broader national efforts to strengthen conservation systems for key crops such as banana, coconut, and paddy—ensuring long-term food security and climate resilience.

With traditional banana varieties gradually disappearing despite India being one of the world’s largest producers, this initiative is expected to play a crucial role in preserving both farmer-developed and scientific varieties. Experts believe that integrating scientific research with farmer participation can create a scalable model for conserving India’s rich agricultural heritage.

The Banana Field Gene Bank is poised to become a cornerstone in India’s efforts to balance innovation with conservation—ensuring that valuable crop diversity is protected for future generations.

Had a meaningful 2.5-hour discussion with Mr. Raja Ram, an important pillar of (Salem Marabu Sandhai) . We spoke in depth about the early challenges they faced and how they successfully organized a market platform for organic farmers. It was inspiring to hear the journey of building trust, consistency, and direct market access for farmers.

We also discussed several practical organic farming methods that can help smallholder farmers improve sustainability and reduce input dependency.

A key focus of our discussion was the possibility of bringing the model into Salem Marabu Sandhai through One Terra Foundation.

For smallholder farmers, PGS can be a game-changer. Compared to conventional organic certification, it is more cost-effective, community-driven, and still builds market credibility through transparent peer-review systems.

All these efforts and learnings will be documented through our channel to create awareness and inspire more farmer collectives.

The future of agriculture lies in collaboration, trust, and farmer-led systems. 🌱
