Seafarers in the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman are facing escalating risks to their lives as attacks on ships escalate. At least six cargo vessels have been hit in the Strait of Hormuz within the last 48 hours.
Seafarers, you are not alone - unions and employers worldwide stand ready to offer protection and support.
The Persian Gulf has been designated a ‘Warlike Operations Area’ - seafarers on ships with IBF agreements have the right to refuse to sail in the area and enhanced pay and compensation.
We are receiving requests for advice and assistance from seafarers in the region every day. Despite severe operational difficulties, some shipping companies have managed to repatriate seafarers back home to safety.

GENERATOR BLACKOUT PREVENTION SYSTEM ON SHIPS:
What is Blackout?
▪︎ A blackout is the total loss of electrical power on the ship.
▪︎ This is very dangerous because it affects:
• Steering
• Navigation
• Engine control
• Safety systems
That’s why ships use a Blackout Prevention System (BPS).
Purpose of Blackout Prevention System:
▪︎ Prevent total power failure
▪︎ Maintain essential services
▪︎ Automatically recover power if blackout happens
How Blackout Prevention Works?
STEP 1: Load Monitoring
▪︎ System continuously monitors:
• Generator load (kW)
• Frequency (Hz)
• Voltage (V)
▪︎ If load increases suddenly → frequency starts to drop
STEP 2: Alarm Stage
▪︎ When frequency drops slightly (example: 58.5–59 Hz) Alarm sounds in ECR
▪︎ Warning to operator
▪︎ No trip yet
STEP 3: Automatic Load Shedding
▪︎ If frequency drops further (example: 57–58 Hz):
▪︎ Non-essential loads are disconnected automatically
Examples of non-essential loads:
• Air conditioning
• Galley equipment
• Deck machinery
• Accommodation lighting
▪︎ Essential loads remain ON
STEP 4: Generator Protection
▪︎ If frequency keeps falling:
• Generator may trip on underfrequency to protect engine and alternator from damage.
▪︎ This is LAST protection before blackout
STEP 5: Auto Start of Standby Generator.
▪︎ If load is still high or generator trips:
• Standby generator auto-starts
• Auto-synchronizes
• Connects to main busbar, usually within 20–45 seconds.
STEP 6: Load Restoration
▪︎ Once power is stable:
▪︎ Loads are restored in priority order
• Essential
• Non-essential
▪︎ Prevents sudden overload again.
⚠️If Total Blackout Happens (Emergency Recovery)
▪︎ Emergency Generator starts automatically within 45 seconds
Supplies power to Essential Equipements:
• Emergency lighting
• Navigation lights
• Radio
• Emergency steering
• Fire pumps
▪︎ Completely independent from main power
Key Protections Used in Blackout Prevention:
▪︎ Underfrequency relay -->Detects overload
▪︎ Load shedding relay --> Removes non-essential load
▪︎ Reverse power relay --> Protects engines
▪︎ Auto start logic --> Starts standby generator, Auto synchronization and Safe paralleling.
Example Scenario (Real Ship Case)
Situation:
▪︎ Bow thruster started while only 1 generator running.
What happens?
• Load jumps to 95%
• Frequency drops
• Load shedding activates
• Standby generator auto-starts
• Thruster continues without blackout
• Ship remains operational
🧠 Simple Rule to Remember:
▪︎ Frequency drop = overload
▪︎ Load shedding saves generators
▪︎ Auto-start prevents blackout
▪︎ Emergency generator is last backup.

Difference between Net tonnage, Gross Tonnage , deadweight Tonnage :
1. Gross Tonnage (GT): This measures the total internal volume of a ship, including all enclosed spaces such as cargo holds, crew quarters, and machinery areas. It reflects the overall size of the ship but doesn’t account for its actual weight or cargo capacity.
2. Net Tonnage (NT): This represents the volume of cargo space available on the ship. It’s calculated by subtracting the space used for the ship’s machinery, crew quarters, and other non-cargo areas from the Gross Tonnage. Net Tonnage indicates how much cargo the ship can carry, excluding areas not used for cargo.
3. Deadweight Tonnage (DWT): This measures the maximum weight a ship can carry, including cargo, fuel, crew, and provisions. It’s the difference between the ship’s weight when fully loaded (its summer load line) and its weight when empty (lightweight). Deadweight Tonnage indicates the total load capacity of the ship.
In summary:
- Gross Tonnage: reflects the overall internal volume.
- Net Tonnage: indicates the volume available for cargo.
- Deadweight Tonnage: measures the total weight the ship can carry.

Oil Tanker Sounion Attacked in Red Sea, Catches Fire
The Greek-flagged oil tanker Sounion was adrift in the Red Sea after being attacked by two small boats off Yemen's Hodeidah port, causing a fire on board. The crew was unharmed and assessing damages. This incident is part of a series of attacks by Houthi militants on international shipping.
The Greek-flagged oil tanker Sounion found itself adrift in the Red Sea on Wednesday after suffering multiple attacks that sparked a fire on board, according to the UK maritime agency.
The vessel, en route near Yemen's port city of Hodeidah, was targeted by two small boats and hit by several projectiles, as confirmed by the Greek Shipping Ministry and the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). A subsequent attack caused the tanker to lose engine power and its ability to navigate.
Delta Tankers, the ship's operator, stated that the Sounion had sustained minor damage, and its crew—comprising 25 members, including two Russians and the rest Filipinos—was evaluating the damage. No injuries were reported. This attack forms part of a series of assaults by Iran-aligned Houthi militants on international shipping in the region since November, leading to U.S. and British retaliatory actions and trade
