Ch-12 No lie

Devansh clapped once, too loud. “Okay. That’s enough Truth or Dare for tonight.” His smile didn’t reach his eyes.
Arnav didn’t move. He stared at his palms like he’d never seen them before.

She needed air. She slipped out, past the marigold toran, past the snacks table where Reyan stood last time. Empty now. Just a shadow.

“Akira.”

Arnav. Behind her. Alone.
“Say it,” he said. “The bet. What do I have to do. I won’t back out.”The party noise was muffled. Safe. For a minute.
Akira turned. He looked wrecked. Hair messy, jaw tight, like he was waiting to be sentenced.

“You think you lost the bet,” she said. “But I won rank 1 on exam, so you owe me.”

Arnav nodded once. “Anything.??🤨”

“Help me.” The word scraped her throat. “Help me find out who X is. Help me find out what happened to Reyan.”

He flinched at the name.His eyes hit the floor, he probably stood on last year. 7th August.

“7th August 2023,” Akira said. “Your house. You said it was your fault. The bet says you do what I say. So say you’ll help. No questions. No backing out. No telling anyone.”
Arnav looked up. And for the first time since the library, he didn’t look like her enemy. He looked like a boy who’d been drowning alone and someone finally threw a rope.

“Okay,” he said. “I’m in.”

Three words. Enemies to allies.

*Two weeks later. School reopened.*
“Last year,” he said, not looking at her. Easier to talk to paper. “Devansh’s birthday. My house. Reyan was there. Zia was there. Rishi was there.”
“Me?” Akira Asked

“You came late with your parents. You and Reyan talked by the snacks table.” -Arnav

Akira’s chest hurt. She didn’t remember. But her body did.

“Rishi started Truth or Dare. He dared Reyan the same thing that he dared us. But With Zia."
He went quiet. ---
*First period.*

The door opened. Principal Sharma walked in with a girl.

“Everyone, this is Inaya Kapoor. She’s transferred from DPS Rohini. Please make her feel welcome.”

Akira felt it before she saw it. The shift in the air. Like before rain.Inaya spotted Arnav. Her whole face lit up.

“Arnav!” She crossed the room in seconds. Arms around his neck before he could stand. “Mom said you were here! And why didn't you tell me you are in this school?"

The class froze.

Pia’s pencil fell. Meera gasped. Vikram made a face like bro....

Arnav’s hands stayed at his sides. He didn’t hug back. But he didn’t step away either. His eyes found Akira over Inaya’s shoulder. One second. Wide. Sorry. Gone.

Inaya pulled back, hands lingering on his shoulders. She turned and looked at Akira. Smiled.

“You must be...?”

“His partner,” Rishi said from the back. Loud. Innocent. A lit match.

Inaya’s smile froze at the edges. “Partner? Funny. Arnav doesn’t do partners.”

At lunch, she cornered Akira by the water taps.

“So,” Inaya said, all light and curls, “you and Arnav are close?”

“We’re doing a project and Nope!!,” Akira said. The lie sat heavy.

Inaya laughed. “He’s terrible at group projects. He always did them with me. Since 6th grade.” She stepped closer. “He tells me everything. Eventually.”

Akira’s phone buzzed.
"She’s here. Now it gets fun. -X"`

Akira didn’t look down. She looked at Inaya.
Inaya was already looking at her. Still smiling.
