Why am I sensitive about the portals, inter-galactic travels, etc. and other such phenomena being associated with the revelation (wahi)?

On the face of it, for those who are not engaged in the dialogue with the atheists and other materialists, this might not be an issue to be vocalised against someone, but others, who happen to understand the epistemic issue in this approach would definitely be more concerned.

From an epistemic perspective, 'scientism' has always claimed about the scientific method to be the only valid source of knowledge as compared to testimony upon which the followers of religion mainly rely upon. Unfortunately, science has managed to attain such an authority in the world of knowledge that only that which science considers to be plausible has some degree of recognition.

The aforementioned approach substantiates this absurd claim of scientism especially if it is deemed to be a sign of a muslim intellectualism by some of our 'intellectual' speakers. Looking at the revelation from the lense of science may not appear to be much of a problem unless we realize that we are giving science the authority to recognise and validate what stands in authority on its own. By popularizing such approach, we are not only undermining one important source of knowledge (i.e. testimony) but also giving science a status that it does not deserve. Not only does it give rise to empiricism but also 'consequently' agrees with the atheistic method of looking at the truth. I agree that those who do it, do not do so intentionally, but this is the outcome and the consequence of their approach.

Don't you see, at the end of the day that is exactly what atheists or a staunch empiricist or a believer of scientism does? He normally doesn't claim to have a problem with the religious text in its entirety, he challenges mainly those religious claims that do not fit-in within his naturalistic framework. His problem is exactly what I have mentioned above with regards to that of the enthusiasts - which is to look at the cosmos and try to find answers 'only' within the naturalistic domain especially those parts of the religion that are 'mushtabihaat' and from the unseen world (ghaib) for which the Creator (Allah SWT) expects us to 'believe' and humble ourselves by disclaiming any sort of unequivocal interpretation.

Our brothers, unfortunately, fall victim to the same approach. We read Quran and try to find answers within the scientific domain (a limited framework in of itself). Those that appear to coincide, we take pride in them and those that do not, we simply re-interpret excusing on behalf of the classical scholarship in similar words: "They could not understand it as the science had not progressed this far in their time." I wonder if the future 'intellectual' speakers would say the same about today's populist "intellectual" speakers' understanding of the text ... (smile)

My main concern is not with using this approach instrumentally and only as a defensive strategy, it is mainly with regards to taking it too far and claiming it to be a 'muslim intellectualism' or an intellectual movement. hence, our disagreement lies on primary issues (usool) rather than secondary issues.
