Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor Skincare Routine Before and After Laser Treatments
At Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor, skin preparation and aftercare matter just as much as the laser treatment itself.
For my own skin, I like keeping things simple. I have been using the Annod Natural skincare range because I prefer gentle, natural-feeling skincare that supports the skin barrier rather than stripping it back. My favourite is the Jojoba after cream. I use it after a shower in the morning and at night, with a gentle facial cleanser.
The biggest change for me has been stopping the harsh scrubbing. No loofah on the face. No aggressive exfoliating. No overcomplicating the routine. Just cleansing properly, moisturising consistently and letting the skin barrier recover.
More information about moisturiser and skin barrier support:
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/topical-pr…
Before laser treatments such as fractional resurfacing or laser peels, the aim is to keep the skin calm, hydrated and protected. That usually means gentle cleansing, regular moisturiser, avoiding unnecessary scrubs or strong active products, and using sunscreen every day. The skin should not be inflamed, sunburnt or irritated before laser.
More information about sunscreen and skin protection:
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/topical-pr…
After laser, the skin needs respect. Whether it is a light laser peel, a deeper peel, or fractional resurfacing, the treated skin can be more sensitive during recovery. This is where gentle skincare becomes important. I like using a facial cleanser and then the Jojoba after cream to keep the skin feeling comfortable, hydrated and supported.
More information about adult facial moisturiser:
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/topical-pr…
Laser treatments can be fantastic for improving skin texture, tone, pigmentation, pores, fine lines and general skin quality, but the treatment has to match the patient’s skin type, downtime and goals. Fractional resurfacing can create a stronger skin renewal effect, while laser peels can be adjusted depending on how much resurfacing and downtime is appropriate.

More information about fractional laser resurfacing:

At Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor, we do not believe in one-size-fits-all skin care or one-size-fits-all laser treatment. The right plan is built around the patient’s skin, pigment risk, treatment history, recovery time and long-term goals.

Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor
I have just started using a jojoba face cream for dry skin and skin barrier support, and as a man who likes simple skin care, I really like it.
For me, skin care is not about looking overdone. I do not want to look overfilled with dermal filler treatment or completely frozen with anti wrinkle treatment. I like a natural look. Subtle, fresh, healthy, but not obvious. That is the same practical approach we believe in at Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor.
The jojoba face cream felt good from the first use. It was moisturising without feeling too oily, and it gave the skin that soft, hydrated, healthy look. For men and women with dry skin, this sort of cream can be useful because dry skin often needs barrier support, not harsh scrubbing or too many strong products.
A good moisturiser helps the skin feel calmer, softer and less tight. It supports the outer skin barrier, which helps hold moisture in and protect the face from dryness, irritation and sensitivity.
Skin care does not need to be complicated. I used to scrub my face every day, and Sharon Leayr kept telling me to stop. Eventually I listened. Now I rinse my face, pat it dry, and moisturise. That small change made a big difference. Sometimes better skin is not about attacking it. Sometimes it is about respecting it. A simple facial cleanser and gentle skin routine can be enough for a lot of people.
For my own skin, laser treatment is also a big part of staying fresh without looking fake. I like fractional laser resurfacing because it can help with overall rejuvenation, skin turnover, brighter looking skin, clearer looking skin, tone, texture and that healthier glow.
I also like laser treatments such as Frac3 style treatment because I get some redness and uneven tone. For some patients, laser can be useful when we are looking at redness, capillaries and vascular change, or broader concerns such as rosacea and facial redness. The aim is not to make someone look different. The aim is to make the skin look clearer, calmer and healthier.
For men, this is really important. A lot of men do not want obvious cosmetic work. They want to look less tired, fresher, healthier and more confident, but still like themselves. That might mean skin care, laser treatments for men, laser peel treatment, fractional laser, capillary treatment, pigmentation treatment or a simple maintenance plan.
Laser safety matters because good treatment is not just about having a good machine. It is about assessment, skin type, settings, consent, aftercare and knowing when not to treat. At Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor, our approach to Fotona laser safety is based on proper consultation, planning, treatment selection and aftercare.
At Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor, Dr Bart Scanlon and Sharon Leayr work together with a practical approach. Dr Bart focuses on natural looking results, honest advice, injectables, assessment and clinical direction. Sharon brings years of skin and laser experience, including Fotona laser treatments, skin rejuvenation and treatment planning.
The goal is simple. Natural looking results, good skin, safe treatment, proper advice, and no pressure. That is part of the core values at Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor.
Sometimes a good moisturiser, a better routine, and the right combination laser treatment plan at the right time can do more than people think.

ONGOING LEARNING AT THE NON-SURGICAL SYMPOSIUM 2026
Sharon & Dr Bart recently attended the Non-Surgical Symposium 2026 at the International Convention Centre Sydney, Darling Harbour. It was a fantastic conference with a strong focus on cosmetic medicine, laser treatments, skin health, skincare, patient safety, and new treatment protocols.
nonsurgical.org.au/
One of the biggest themes was the future of laser and skincare working together. There was a lot of discussion around pre-laser skincare, skin barrier preparation, pigment management, redness, capillaries, rosacea, and how preparing the skin properly before treatment may help improve comfort, reduce downtime, and support better results.
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/treatment/laser-tre…
Fractional laser remains one of the most important skin treatments we offer at Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor. It can help improve the appearance of pores, texture, fine lines, acne scarring, sun damage, pigmentation, uneven skin tone, and overall skin quality.
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/treatment/laser-tre…
There was also a strong focus on aftercare. Good aftercare is not just about recovery. It is about reducing irritation, supporting the skin barrier, improving comfort, helping the skin heal well, and reducing the risk of avoidable side effects after laser and cosmetic treatments.
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/governance/aftercar…
Laser safety is a major part of what we do. At Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor, our Fotona Dynamis and Fotona StarWalker laser treatments are supported by clinical policies, laser safety procedures, patient assessment, consent, skin preparation, eye protection, documentation, and aftercare instructions.
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/laser-ener…
Our fractional laser treatments are also supported by detailed clinical policy and procedure documents. These help guide safer treatment planning, pre-care, treatment settings, aftercare, documentation, and follow up.
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/laser-ener…
Another exciting area discussed at the conference was regenerative and skin-supportive treatments, including newer options such as PDRN, exosomes, bio-exosomes, polynucleotides, and other emerging cosmetic skin treatments. Some of these treatments are still developing areas, so proper patient selection, evidence, safety, product quality, and clinical governance are extremely important.

Sharon Leayr is our experienced skin and laser therapist at Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor. Sharon has nearly a decade of hands-on experience and uses advanced laser and skin technologies including Fotona Dynamis, Fotona StarWalker, and Venus Viva. newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/about/sharon-leayr/
The Fotona Dynamis and Fotona StarWalker are incredibly versatile laser systems. Different settings can be adjusted depending on the skin concern, treatment depth, downtime, comfort, and clinical goal. Treatments can be lighter or stronger, deeper or more superficial, depending on the patient’s skin, concern, and treatment plan.

Ongoing Learning at Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor
Ongoing learning matters at Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor.
Dr Bart Scanlon attended the NSS Non-Surgical Symposium 2026 at ICC Sydney, Darling Harbour, continuing education across anti-wrinkle treatment planning, dermal filler technique, facial shaping, volumisation and facial harmony.
Anti-wrinkle planning is not about freezing the face. The goal is careful assessment, natural movement and a refreshed result:
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/treatment/anti-wrin…
Dermal filler is not simply “adding volume”. It can support structure, restore age-related volume loss and improve facial balance when planned conservatively:
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/treatment/dermal-fi…
Men’s and women’s filler planning can differ. Male treatment often focuses on structure, chin and jawline definition. Female treatment often focuses on softer contour, midface support and balance:
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/cosmetic-i…
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/cosmetic-i…
Facial harmony and the Golden Ratio can guide proportions, but they are not rigid rules. Anatomy, safety and natural identity come first:

Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor
Men’s treatments at Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor are becoming more common because many men want to look fresher, healthier and less tired, without looking overdone.
Anti-wrinkle treatments for men are commonly used for frown lines, forehead lines, crow’s feet and jaw clenching. Men often have stronger facial muscles, thicker skin and heavier brow structure than women, so treatment needs to be planned differently. The aim is not to feminise the face or freeze expression. The goal is to soften harsh lines while keeping a natural, masculine look.
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/mens-treatments/men…
Dermal fillers for men are different from female filler treatments. In men, treatment is usually focused on structure: jawline, chin, cheeks, under-eye hollowing and facial support. Male filler treatment should respect sharper angles, stronger lower-face projection and natural facial proportions. Poorly planned filler can make the face look soft or overdone, so we focus on balance, subtlety and anatomy.
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/mens-treatments/men…
This is my favourite: laser treatments. At Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor, laser treatments can work really well for men because they improve the skin itself. Fractional laser resurfacing, laser peels, pigment treatment, capillary treatment and skin rejuvenation can help with rough texture, enlarged pores, sun damage, redness, uneven tone and tired-looking skin. Laser is not about changing your face. It is about improving the surface, clarity and quality of the skin so the face looks cleaner, healthier and more refreshed.
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/mens-treatments/men…
Men’s and women’s cosmetic treatments should not be planned the same way. Male anatomy often includes stronger muscle movement, thicker skin, heavier brows, more angular bone structure and different aesthetic goals. Women may want softer curves or lift; men usually want to keep strength, shape and definition. That is why our treatment planning is based on anatomy, not a one-size-fits-all approach.
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/mens-treatments/
This was my skin over 12 years ago — my nose, my face and my general skin quality — and now look at it today, 12 years later. This shows the difference you can get with consistent, good-quality treatments. This result is not anti-wrinkle and dermal filler. This is purely laser treatments, resurfacing, laser peels, cleansing and moisturising morning and night, plus SPF sunscreen.
Moisturiser matters because healthy skin needs barrier support. Cleansing without moisturising can leave the skin dry, irritated and rough. A good moisturiser helps support hydration, comfort and smoother-looking skin, especially after laser treatments or daily sun exposure.
newcastlecosmeticdoctor.com.au/policies/topical-pr…
SPF sunscreen is one of the most important parts of long-term skin care. In Newcastle, UV exposure contributes to pigmentation, redness, sun damage, rough texture and early ageing. Laser treatments can improve skin quality, but daily SPF helps protect the skin and maintain results.

Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor
At Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor, patients receive a coordinated, medical-led approach to cosmetic injectables and advanced laser skin treatments in Broadmeadow, Newcastle.
Dr Bart Scanlon has over 10 years’ experience in cosmetic medicine, with a focus on anti-wrinkle treatment, dermal filler, natural-looking results, realistic advice, and long-term treatment planning.
The clinic’s approach is built around personalised treatments, honest advice, and natural results.
Sharon Leayr is the clinic’s experienced skin and laser therapist. Sharon looks after the advanced skin and laser treatments at Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor, including laser treatments for pigmentation, redness, broken capillaries, vascular concerns, acne scarring, skin texture, collagen stimulation, and skin tightening.
Using advanced Fotona Dynamis and Fotona StarWalker laser technology, Sharon tailors treatment according to skin type, medical history, previous laser treatments, pigmentation risk, downtime, and the patient’s individual skin concern.
One of the key strengths of Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor is continuity of care. Dr Bart performs the cosmetic injectable treatments. Sharon performs the laser and skin treatments. After working together for nearly a decade, they are able to plan treatment in a coordinated way, so patients are not passed between different practitioners who do not know their face, history, or long-term goals.
For anti-wrinkle treatment, Dr Bart’s approach is conservative, anatomical, and natural-looking. Treatment planning is based on facial movement, muscle strength, brow position, medical history, and the result the patient is trying to achieve.
Male and female faces often need different planning. For men, anti-wrinkle treatment often needs to account for stronger facial muscles, thicker skin, heavier brow position, and the goal of maintaining a natural masculine appearance. For women, treatment may more commonly focus on softening expression lines, maintaining facial balance, and creating a refreshed look without looking frozen or overdone.
Dermal filler treatment is approached in the same way: structured, conservative, and proportion-focused. In men, dermal filler may be planned around jawline, chin, and lower-face support while keeping the result masculine and natural. In women, filler may be used for facial balance, contour, lip shape, support, or age-related volume loss.
For men considering skin treatments, laser treatments for men may help with pigmentation, sun damage, redness, broken capillaries, acne scarring, skin texture, enlarged pores, and mild skin laxity.
Laser safety matters. Before laser treatment, Sharon assesses skin type, medical history, previous laser treatments, medications, sun exposure, pigmentation risk, and downtime. Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor also has dedicated Laser & Energy-Device Safety policies and a specific Laser Safety SOP for Fotona Dynamis and Fotona StarWalker.

Vascular Laser Treatment Newcastle | Fotona Dynamis Nd:YAG for Facial Capillaries & Redness
At Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor, we commonly treat facial capillaries, diffuse redness, rosacea-related vascularity and small visible blood vessels using the Fotona SP Dynamis Nd:YAG laser platform.
These small superficial vessels are extremely common and can appear around the nose, cheeks and chin. They are often associated with genetics, rosacea, fair skin, chronic sun exposure, ageing, heat exposure and repeated inflammation within the skin.
The Fotona Nd:YAG laser works by delivering energy directly into the targeted blood vessel. The haemoglobin within the vessel absorbs the laser energy, generating heat that causes controlled coagulation and collapse of the vessel wall while aiming to minimise damage to the surrounding skin.
Over time, the body naturally clears the treated vessel through normal healing processes.
This treatment can be effective for:
• Fine facial capillaries
• Spider veins
• Diffuse facial redness
• Rosacea-associated redness
• Broken vessels around the nose
• Red vascular lesions
• Certain superficial cherry angiomas
Treatment time depends on the size and number of vessels being treated, however many sessions are relatively quick and may take approximately 10–30 minutes.
Most patients describe the sensation as a quick hot flick, snap or mild stinging feeling. Discomfort is generally well tolerated, and the Fotona system includes integrated cooling and controlled treatment parameters to help improve comfort and protect the skin surface during treatment.
Cooling is important because it:
• Helps reduce discomfort
• Protects the superficial skin layers
• Minimises excessive heat build-up
• Reduces inflammation and irritation
• Improves treatment tolerability
Immediately after treatment, it is common to experience:
• Redness
• Mild swelling
• Warmth
• Temporary darkening of vessels
• Mild sensitivity
Some vessels may disappear immediately, while others can gradually fade over several weeks as the body clears the treated vascular tissue.
Depending on the severity of redness and vessel size, some patients may require multiple treatments for optimal improvement.
Following vascular laser treatment, patients are generally advised to:
• Avoid excessive heat and sweating for 24–48 hours
• Avoid aggressive skincare products temporarily
• Use gentle moisturiser and SPF
• Avoid direct sun exposure
• Avoid picking or irritating treated areas
At Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor, all laser treatments are tailored based on skin type, vascular severity, patient history and treatment goals.

Fractional Laser Aftercare Guide | Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor
Proper aftercare following fractional laser treatment is extremely important to support healing, reduce complications, protect the skin barrier and help achieve the best possible long-term outcome.
At Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor, all patients are provided with detailed post-treatment instructions following fractional laser resurfacing, laser peel treatments and combination laser procedures.
Immediately after treatment, it is normal to experience redness, warmth, swelling and a tight sunburn-like sensation. Depending on the intensity of treatment, swelling can increase over the first 24–48 hours before gradually improving.
Some patients may also notice:
• Dryness and rough texture
• Bronzing or darkening of the skin
• Mild itching
• Grid marks from the fractional pattern
• Temporary sensitivity
• Peeling and flaking over the following days
Immediately after treatment:
• Keep the skin cool and protected
• Use only recommended recovery creams and gentle moisturisers
• Avoid touching, scratching or picking the skin
• Strictly avoid active skincare products including retinol, vitamin A, AHAs, BHAs, exfoliants and acids
• Avoid excessive heat, saunas, steam rooms and strenuous exercise for at least 48 hours
• Avoid direct sun exposure
At Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor, we commonly apply post-laser recovery creams immediately after treatment to help calm inflammation, support the skin barrier and reduce irritation during the healing process.
For the first 24–72 hours:
• Wash the skin gently using cool or lukewarm water only
• Use a gentle cleanser if advised
• Continue moisturiser and recovery cream regularly
• Sleep slightly elevated if swelling occurs
• Avoid makeup until the skin barrier has settled
• Avoid swimming pools, chlorinated water and excessive sweating
Over the next week:
The skin will often become dry and begin lightly peeling or flaking. This is part of the normal skin renewal process. Patients should allow the skin to shed naturally and avoid exfoliating manually.
Sun protection is critical during recovery. Broad-spectrum SPF should be worn daily and direct UV exposure avoided, as fresh post-laser skin is more vulnerable to pigmentation changes and sun damage.
Recovery time varies depending on treatment intensity:
• Light laser peel: approximately 2–4 days
• Moderate fractional resurfacing: approximately 5–7 days
• More aggressive resurfacing: 7–14 days or longer
Collagen remodelling continues for weeks to months following treatment, with many patients gradually noticing:
• Smoother texture
• Brighter skin tone
• Reduced pore size
• Improved skin firmness
• Reduction in superficial pigmentation
• Softening of fine lines and acne scarring
• Improved skin glow and overall skin quality
