Welcome to Legg Creek Farm - where my passion for fruit trees, gardening, and a little travel all come together! I grow and graft high-quality fruit trees right here in Texas, designed to thrive in the southern United States but hardy enough to do well in northern climates, too.

On this channel, I share practical gardening tips, fruit tree care advice, foraging insights, and even some travel experiences. My goal is to help you grow healthier trees, discover new plants, and enjoy the rewards of gardening, no matter where you live. Iโ€™m always adding new varieties and expanding what I offer, all while focusing on quality and customer satisfaction.

The American beautyberry (Callicarpa americana), a native deciduous shrub of the southeastern United States, is valued for its ornamental appeal, ecological contributions, and historical uses.

Modern research shows that parts of the American beautyberry plant, including the bark, leaves, and berries, have anti-microbial and anti-fungal properties. The plant was used extensively medicinally by Native Americans. Some recent research seems to indicate that the plant also has anti-cancer properties.

For the home gardener, American beautyberry has numerous benefits. Itโ€™s a great landscape plant thatโ€™s adapted to many conditions in its native range. The leaves act as a natural insect repellent. They can be simply rubbed on the skin for a short term repellent. They can also be soaked in vodka or rubbing alcohol for 2-4 days and then strained out. The solution can be added to a spray bottle and used as an effective insect repellent for mosquitos and ticks.

The berries are a vibrant purple and are attractive in a landscape. They stay on the plan well into autumn, providing food for birds and other wildlife.

The berries are edible by humans and can be eaten raw. Their taste varies from bland to slightly medicinal. Many people use the berries to make a tasty jelly.

The roots can be used to make a tea that was used in traditional medicine. #foraging #nativeplants
