Saint John the Baptist is one of only three figures in the Catholic liturgical calendar whose earthly birth is celebrated, alongside Jesus Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary.The date of June 24 is fixed exactly six months before the Nativity of Christ (Christmas). This is structurally derived from the Gospel of Luke (1:36), which notes that Elizabeth was in her sixth month of pregnancy when the Angel Gabriel visited Mary. His birthday falls near the summer solstice, after which the days begin to shorten. This provides a direct cosmic parallel to his famous scriptural declaration regarding Jesus: "He must increase, but I must decrease" (John 3:30).While today celebrates his birth, his martyrdom (the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist) is commemorated later in the year on a separate date, August 29. He was born in the Judaean hill country to the elderly priest Zechariah and his barren wife Elizabeth, a relative of Mary. His name was divinely mandated by the Angel Gabriel, breaking from family tradition.The Precursor: Sanctified in his mother's womb during the Visitation, he spent his early adult years living an ascetic life in the wilderness dressed in camel's hair.
