Oh, yes, who doesn't need to hear a Portuguese person on loop, preferably at 0.5 speed?
But in real life such options don't always exist.
Or maybe in your culture interrupting isn't considered polite.
But you see, a cry for help, for another chance of understanding us isn't rude in Portugal.
It's essential if you want the conversation to continue.
If you don't want the person to change gears and start speaking in English or give up on you.
You deserve to understand.
And to be understood.
At The Language Unschool, after helping you train your ear to real Portuguese I teach conversation skills to keep the conversation going.
This Unschooler is already applying some of my strategies because of a free video even you have access to.
Knowing how to manage a conversation is the only way to go beyond "bom dia" and "tudo bem?".
Não, não está tudo bem! You want to know more of the person you pass by every single day. Perhaps even just to know you don't have a lot in common... So why bother?
But maybe the next-door neighbour is worth the effort.
It's the difference between living in a see-through bubble where you can see but not touch.
You can apply to The Language Unschool here - thelanguageunschool.com/apply - to drastically change your experience in Portugal because the way I teach you Portuguese is nothing but conventional.
Ask good questions. Because you’ve been putting in the work to learn Portuguese.
But are you making the progress you expected?
Are you getting the support you need?
Are you enjoying the process?
On Sunday, 19th of April you will get to ask me good questions so you can ditch the excuses, put the hurdles aside, and start seeing what you can change to make Portuguese yours.
Because the moment you have real support, someone who looks at who you are, how you learn best, where you are in life, what's stopping you from finding your voice in Portuguese, nothing stops you!
You forget about goals of perfect fluency, you start noticing how Portuguese feels more and more like your own language, and you know you can ask for help and advice whenever things get hard (they normally do…).
I'm not claiming I'll be able to help everyone, to be that mother figure you can always go back to, even when you're more independent in Portuguese. That I save for those who choose to become Portuguese Unschoolers. But next Sunday, for one hour you can pick my brains on all the experience I've built in learning 11 languages over 30+ years and ask me anything related to learning Portuguese.

The amount of people that come to me saying "you're my last bet" is astonishing. People have put in hours, tons of money, patience, tried different tutors and courses, Instagram account and YouTube videos.. Sure, they've learnt something, they can manage alright at shops and at restaurants (I wonder) they pretend they are tourists so as not to feel ashamed they can't string a sentence together.
The main stumbling block, even for a vaguely Portuguese pronunciation that, for a moment, can fool a local, is not to be able to understand what we say. It scares people, it stops people, it makes them hide from the neighbour. But why did you bother uprooting your life, leaving family and friends behind after all?
This Unschooler wants friends and she shall have them. I'm providing the structure, the support, the feedback. She's already impressed two people with a simple greeting, said in a more native way (with as much swallowed up as possible ;)).
And now this: she takes a break from it all while on holiday and listens to an A1 podcast (I imagine it's Cinderella Portuguese, but I didn't even bother to ask her). This is when such content is relevant because all Unschoolers who go back to such content realize: -this is too easy -I understand this And in this specific case: -I didn't translate in my head first.
I've learnt a bunch of other languages and there's nothing like the feeling of speaking in and understanding the message directly in the language you're learning, without resorting to third party! It's just you and Portuguese now.

I suffered from this too when taking the train in Amsterdam. I couldn't focus on my book with all the languages being spoken around me...

4 years of courses and studying Portuguese: Portuguese=a bunch of words you can't put together
vs.
2 months of Unschooling: Portuguese=a language I'm starting to understand

Desculpe...
one word, several meanings behind it:
formality,
an apology,
a question that shows confusion,
a request for repetition.
