Peter Gabriel is best known as a musician. He started his solo work in 1975 after leaving his old school group: Genesis. He has released eleven solo albums and written and released soundtracks for three films.
"I think part of the reason that ‘So’ works so well was that the band was really firing off each other and we had a great sound and production team. It was compact in the process and the way it was put together." - pg
"The song began around a chord sequence which I liked and which felt quite poppy and playful, so I just kept on playing around with it till I had something. Of all the songs that I’ve written for i/o and o\i this is probably the poppiest for me."
'What Lies Ahead' live in Verona as part of the i/o tour in 2023. The full performance is now available here on YouTube.
'It’s a song about inventors and invention. My dad was an electrical engineer, inventor and I saw him go through the frustrations of not only trying to realize an idea, which has to normally go through so many iterations, but then to sell it, both to the people who've got the money and then to the outside world. So, I've always been curious about the creative process and how that applies to inventors.' -pg
The most recent video to join 5050 comes from Mark Charlesworth, a songwriter, specialising in wistful-but-hopeful, highly melodic music, who began experimenting with filmmaking to create accompanying videos for his own music. For his contribution to 5050 he takes on the song 'I Grieve' from Up. Movingly, he tells us that he turned to the song for comfort after suddenly losing two friends in Summer 2025. 'No other song encapsulated the feeling of gut-punching loss, punctuated by moments of hope as life continues to happen all around,' he says. Thanks to Mark for sharing his video along with his words and those of Carol Hands, Melanie Williamson, Brian Charlesworth and Chris Newton.

Many people have died on the road to achieving democracy and unless we are very careful and speak up now, it’s under real threat in both new and old democracies - pg
Something a bit different for the latest upload to 5050.dev from Pamela Glintenkamp, a video and audio producer, editor, and writer specialising in wildlife conservation, arts and culture, and film history. This film uses footage Pamela shot at Botswana’s only elephant orphanage, the charity Elephant Havens. "The emotional connection between orphaned elephants and the handlers who raise them is profound," Pamela tells us. "In the film, I’ve paired the song lyrics with imagery that expresses this extraordinary relationship."
