Beyondnature1980 | High Sierra Explorer
Deep-dive into the rugged beauty of the Sierra-Sequoia National Forest and Sequoia & Kings Canyon. From day treks to serene stays at Cats Head Campsite, I share guides on hiking, camping, and sustainable wilderness exploration.
Following Theodore Roosevelt’s lead, I view these lands as a "sacred trust" to be cherished for generations. Whether it’s the "history and romance" of the trail or adding "life to your years," my mission is to help you navigate the High Sierra with purpose.
Speak softly, carry a big stick, and let’s explore the heritage of the Great Outdoors.

Hey everyone! 🌾 Our latest Short is officially live, and we’re heading out to the quiet farmlands near Riverdale to check out a true Central Valley hidden gem: The 1916 Elkhorn Bridge.
If you’ve ever driven down Elkhorn Avenue, you might have noticed this strange structure standing right next to the modern road. From a distance, it looks like a standard metal railroad bridge—but when you get up close, you realize the entire intricate truss network is cast out of reinforced concrete.
Built 110 years ago along the old Elkhorn Grade to connect Fresno to the Coalinga oil fields, it is now the only surviving bridge of its exact design in the entire state of California.
Check out the new Short to see this engineering paradox up close, and let me know in the comments if you’ve ever spotted it out in the fields! 🎬👇

The next video is taking us deep into the rugged Kings River canyon at Green Cabin Flat! 🏕️
At just 1,000 feet elevation, this spot balances intense Class III whitewater with incredible pioneer history. We’re exploring the route down Davis Road and uncovering the stories of the early German settlers at Kirch Flat, the Kirkman family at Kirkmans Point, and the Crabtrees along Davis Creek at the Mill Flat Creek junction.
The video will released Saturday morning. Drop a comment if you’ve ever explored past Pine Flat!
Stay tuned, and go your own way. 🥾🌲

Exploring the "Hard Rock" Legacy of the Kings River Gorge 🏔️🌲🥾🏞🪚🪓🌲⛰️
In our latest expedition on ‪@beyondnature1980‬ we’re hiking the rugged Balch Trail to uncover the incredible history hidden within these granite walls.
A century ago, this gorge was the site of a massive industrial undertaking. From the specialized Swiss alpinists who scaled the vertical cliffs to the pioneers who settled Balch Camp, the grit required to build the Afterbay Dam and the Balch Powerhouse was legendary.
As we trek through the "Alpine green" and overlook the deep canyon, we’re following in the footsteps of the mountaineer-engineers who tamed the North Fork.

It’s great to be back in the heart of Kings Canyon! After my last trek here in June 2024, returning to these iconic landmarks on May 2026, was a reminder of why this region is so special.
I’ve been back on the Bubbs Creek Trail, standing over the thunderous Kings River at the Bailey Bridge, and spending time documenting the stone legacy of Knapp’s Cabin. There’s a unique energy in Cedar Grove this time of year, and I can’t wait to share the new perspectives I’ve captured.
I am currently in the editing room working on several new Shorts and historical updates to bring you closer to the High Sierra.
Stay tuned for fresh content coming your way soon! 🏔️🌲

The granite of the High Sierra holds more than just views; it holds ghosts of the 1800s. Just 4.5 miles past the Bailey Bridge junction at Trimmer Springs Road, the climb up Mill Flat Creek Road leads into the heart of pioneer territory.
This was the domain of the Crabtree family, German pioneers who arrived during the chaos of the Gold Rush but found their true calling in the rugged Sierra soil. They were tough-as-nails ranchers who settled this drainage, driving cattle through the canyons where Davis Creek flows into Mill Flat.
By the late 1800s, the quiet of their ranching life was replaced by the roar of the logging boom. These German settlers and their neighbors transformed the landscape, using ox-teams to haul timber that would eventually travel down the great flumes to the valley floor.
We’re walking in the footsteps of giants today. The wilderness preserves their history; we just have to be quiet enough to listen.
