Everything about Anne Frank: her life, her diary, and the Annex.
The Anne Frank House was established on 3 May 1957 in cooperation with Otto Frank, Anne Frank’s father. We are an independent non-profit organisation that runs a museum in the house where Anne Frank went into hiding and we try to increase awareness of Anne’s life story all over the world, encouraging people to reflect on the dangers of antisemitism, racism, and discrimination, and the importance of freedom, equal rights, and democracy.

On 6 July 1942, Anne Frank and her family went into hiding. Quotes from her diary reveal how she experienced this day. She wrote: ‘So much has happened it’s as if the whole world had suddenly turned upside down. But as you can see Kitty, I’m still alive, and that’s the main thing, Father says.’
In July 1942, the Nazis began deporting Jews from the Netherlands to concentration and extermination camps. Margot, Anne’s sister, was among the first group of Jews in the Netherlands to be summoned.
The Frank family decided to go into hiding the next morning. Her cat Moortje was the only one Anne could say goodbye to. Early in the morning, Anne and her parents left their home to walk to the hiding place. Her sister had already left by bike.
As they walked, Anne’s parents explained that they had been preparing a hiding place in the annex of her father’s company building. Since they had to go into hiding earlier than planned, the Annex was not yet fully ready. A busy day awaited Anne.
‘All day long we unpacked boxes, filled cupboards, hammered nails and straightened up the mess, until we fell exhausted into our clean beds at night. We hadn't eaten a hot meal all day, but we didn't care; Mother and Margot were too tired and keyed up to eat, and Father and I were too busy.’
Anne Frank and her family would stay hidden in the Annex for 761 days, until the hiding place was discovered on 4 August 1944. Anne, her family and the four other Jewish people hiding there, were arrested and deported to concentration and extermination camps.

Today we commemorate Anne Frank’s birthday. Anne Frank was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, on 12 June 1929, 97 years ago today. She was the younger sister of Margot Frank, who was born on 16 February 1926, 100 years ago this year. Despite their very different personalities, the sisters shared a close bond.
Anne confided her deepest feelings to her diary. It served both as an emotional outlet and as a source of inspiration for the novel she hoped to write about her time in hiding. Thanks to the efforts of helpers Miep Gies and Bep Voskuijl, the diary was preserved, and thanks to her father, Otto Frank, Anne’s account of the Annex was published after the war.
