The United States has officially denied reports claiming it moved a key missile defense system from South Korea to the Middle East.

This clarification came from General Xavier Brunson, commander of United States Forces Korea, during a Senate hearing. He addressed growing concerns that such a move could weaken defenses against North Korea.

According to Brunson, the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system remains fully deployed on the Korean Peninsula. THAAD is designed to intercept ballistic missiles at high altitudes and plays a critical role in regional security.

However, he acknowledged that some military equipment movements did take place. Certain radar systems and munitions were repositioned as part of broader US military preparations in the Middle East. These movements may have caused confusion and led to inaccurate reports.

Brunson also noted that equipment shifts at bases like Osan Air Base may have contributed to the misunderstanding.

Earlier reports in March suggested that the Pentagon was considering — or had already begun — relocating parts of the THAAD system, raising concerns in South Korea about its defensive readiness.

Despite those concerns, South Korean officials have stated they remain confident in their ability to counter threats from North Korea, even if adjustments are made to US military assets in the region.
