Capturing the world without bias or fear

Our founders quit their jobs in August 2020 because they couldn’t bear consuming divisive, biased, and fear-mongering news any longer. News media had been deteriorating for years; the pandemic accelerated the trend.

Our founders envisioned a media company that helped people live happier, healthier, and more informed lives. They set out to create convenient news products that did that.

“Roca” is short for “Pororoca,” a biannual wave that sweeps the Amazon River. Surfers come from across the world to surf the Pororoca; it’s a wave that brings people together. That’s Roca’s mission with the news.

Thanks to everyone who has watched. Our most viral video ever!

Our goal is to capture the country as it really is. It's amazing how much our media fails at that. We're grateful for every trip we take and every conversation we have.

RocaNews

Today, April 29, is Roca Day – the six-year anniversary of when we had the idea to start Roca.

To celebrate, we are giving all our new readers a FREE month of Roca premium.

Back in April 2020, we sent our first emails and had our first phone calls expressing our frustrations with the divisive, biased, fear-mongering news ecosystem, which had hit an extreme during the pandemic.

We, along with our third co-founder Billy, quit our jobs to create a company that helped people live happier, healthier, and more informed lives. We believed the news shouldn’t be a chore nor tell you what to think.

After months of sleepless nights and zero results, Roca finally started to grow in 2021. Five years later, we deliver news to over 3M people across our Substack, app, Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook.

In 2026, Roca fits between two kinds of media.

On one side are legacy journalists, who shun most Americans and wouldn’t enter a bad neighborhood without a preconceived notion and five bodyguards. On the other are alt-media podcasters, who spend all day inside of studios spewing whatever opinion will get them the most views.

Roca does real, on-the-ground reporting to give you an honest view of what the world is really like.

We’ve loved every minute of bringing you mini docs, and we think you'll love our unbiased daily news and long-form deep-dives, too.

Your support enables us to achieve our mission of capturing the world without bias or fear.

We hope you enjoy the full access to our content over the next month.

If you like our reporting, and you’d like to support Roca’s mission, you can upgrade to a paid subscription at the end of the month.

Until then, enjoy the free Roca. It’s the least we can do for you all, without whom we would just be three guys in our parents’ basements. Roca has grown because of you, and we thank you – from the bottom of our hearts – for all of your support.

Great news (PLUS: Looking for SOUTH CAROLINA help)!

You may remember Don from our "Appalachia's Disappearing Hillbillies" video, in which he mentioned that he was suffering from cancer. Well, we were back in Georgia after 18 months and stopped by to see him, and he says he's doing much better than he was then. We were thrilled to hear that and loved talking to him. We'll have another video out with him soon!

Also, we are looking for people in South Carolina to help us understand the coast, Charleston, and the low country. If you're in that area and can show us around (especially the swamps and islands) please get in touch! THANK YOU!
