The Gospel of Matthew, chapter 1 lists the genealogy of Jesus Christ, and uniquely mentions five women. Each of them has a powerful story that shows God’s grace and plan of salvation. Here’s a brief account of each:

1. Tamar (Genesis 38)

Background: Tamar was the daughter-in-law of Judah. Left widowed and childless, she was denied justice when Judah failed to give her his third son in marriage.

Character: Courageous, determined, and willing to risk shame to secure her place in the family line.

Relation with God: God honored her persistence; through her son Perez, she became part of the line that led to the Messiah.

2. Rahab (Joshua 2; 6:22–25)

Background: Rahab was a Canaanite prostitute in Jericho who sheltered Israelite spies.

Character: Brave, wise, and faithful in trusting the God of Israel over her own people.

Relation with God: She confessed, “The Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath” (Joshua 2:11). Her faith saved her family and placed her in Christ’s ancestry.

3. Ruth (Book of Ruth)

Background: A Moabite woman, widowed young, who chose to remain loyal to her mother-in-law Naomi and follow Israel’s God.

Character: Loyal, humble, hardworking, and virtuous.

Relation with God: She declared, “Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God” (Ruth 1:16). She married Boaz, becoming the great-grandmother of King David.

4. Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11–12)

Background: Wife of Uriah, taken by King David in adultery. Her husband was killed, and she bore deep sorrow. Later, she became the mother of Solomon.

Character: Suffered injustice, yet showed dignity and strength in later years.

Relation with God: Though her story began in sin and tragedy, God brought restoration. Through her, the royal line leading to Jesus continued.

5. Mary (Luke 1–2; Matthew 1–2)

Background: A young virgin from Nazareth, betrothed to Joseph. Chosen by God to bear His Son, Jesus, through the Holy Spirit.

Character: Pure, obedient, humble, and full of faith.

Relation with God: When the angel announced God’s plan, she answered, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38). She is remembered as the blessed mother of the Savior.

✅ Summary:

Tamar – Fought for justice.

Rahab – Saved by faith.

Ruth – Loyal convert.

Bathsheba – Restored by God’s grace.

Mary – Chosen to bear the Son of God.

Together, these women reveal that God works through brokenness, faith, loyalty, repentance, and obedience to bring His salvation plan to fulfillment in Jesus Christ.

1. Tamar – Daughter-in-law of Judah

📖 Genesis 38

Tamar was the wife of Er, the firstborn son of Judah (one of Jacob’s twelve sons).

Er was wicked in the sight of the Lord, so God put him to death.

According to the custom of levirate marriage, Judah gave his second son, Onan, to Tamar so that he could raise offspring for his brother. But Onan refused, and God put him to death as well.

Judah promised his third son, Shelah, to Tamar when he grew up, but he did not keep his word.

Tamar disguised herself as a prostitute and waited for Judah. Without knowing it was his daughter-in-law, Judah slept with her.

She became pregnant with twin sons, Perez and Zerah.

When Judah realized what happened, he said, “She is more righteous than I, since I did not give her to my son Shelah” (Genesis 38:26).

📌 Significance:

Tamar is remembered as a woman who secured justice for herself.

Her son Perez became an ancestor of King David and eventually Jesus Christ (see Matthew 1:3).

2. Tamar – Daughter of King David

📖 2 Samuel 13

Tamar was the beautiful daughter of King David and sister of Absalom.

Her half-brother, Amnon, lusted after her and pretended to be ill. He tricked David into sending Tamar to care for him.

Amnon forced her, despite her pleas. Afterward, he hated her and sent her away in disgrace.

Tamar lived in her brother Absalom’s house, desolate and heartbroken.

Absalom killed Amnon later in revenge for his sister’s suffering.

📌 Significance:

Tamar’s story is a tragic account of betrayal and abuse within David’s household.

It highlights the consequences of unchecked desire, injustice, and family conflict.

Her pain is remembered as part of the brokenness in David’s family line.

✅ Summary:

Tamar of Judah (Genesis 38): A widow who ensured her place in God’s plan by bearing Perez, an ancestor of Jesus.

Tamar, daughter of David (2 Samuel 13): A princess who suffered injustice and remained desolate due to Amnon’s sin.
