Did you know the idea behind the washing machine “spin” cycle traces back to a Black woman in the 19th century?
In 1888, Ellen Elgin improved the clothes-wringer, a hand-cranked device used to squeeze water from freshly washed clothes. Before dryers, this step mattered. Heavy, soaked garments took forever to dry and demanded exhausting physical labor. Elgin’s design pressed water out faster and more evenly. This reduced strain and made indoor drying more efficient when heat was precious.
Her improvement worked so well it became standard. But Elgin sold the rights for $18 while others profited from her idea for years.
Modern washing machines didn’t appear out of nowhere. They evolved from practical a mind solving an everyday problem.
