This album began life as Grunges, a sequel to Goths, after I made a joke on social media about writing a song called “Contemplating Pearl Jam in the Carolina Dawn.” A few months later, my wife left town for a two-week residency in Virginia. My wife leaving town to play hockey in Banff is how All Hail West Texas happened. These songs are loosely about the 70s, 80s, and 90s, which is to say they’re about the accumulation of days, each one a little further back than the next, sometimes miraculously seeming clearer as they recede and sometimes blurring into unrecognizable shapes, which are sometimes pleasant and sometimes troubling. Most songs here are in major keys, but don’t let that fool you. If you do let that fool you, I have a bridge to sell you; there is nothing on the other side of the bridge. Still, you shouldn’t let that deter you. Who am I to tell you what kind of bridge you need, or where the bridge you need should lead? Nobody, really. Nobody at all.

I’ve looked up to Mary Chapin Carpenter for half my life. Getting to know her over the past few years has been such a pure pleasure, so when she asked about doing a split single where we pick songs to cover and help each other out on the effort, what could we say but “hell yes”? Mary Chapin picked a World Party song I’ve always loved and I picked out a Christine Fellows song I can barely sing without crying. But I did it! Matt arranged it! This was a great joy for us and I hope you dig it!

“Put the Message In the Box / Migrations” is streaming everywhere now and is available to order on limited edition Highway Tar Swirl or Windshield Clear 7" vinyl. lnkfi.re/tMGMCC

I've been writing songs whose titles start with "Going to..." for thirty years or so – it's an informal series within our catalog, though I don't do so many of them any more. Last year I was listening to multiple versions of the Dead's "Peggy-O" (try the version from Cameron Indoor Stadium, Durham, NC, 4/12/78) and thinking about Fennario, also the land of "Dire Wolf," and I thought I'd write a traditional style tune myself. I thought about how lucid and unsentimental traditional songs are about death and change – how folk songs present life as it is and let the feeling flow from there – and I wrote "Going to Fennario." themountaingoats.bandcamp.com/track/going-to-fenna…

I listen to the Grateful Dead all the time; their endless musical curiosity is a north star for anybody who seeks a life in music, plus anybody who tours in a rock band walks down paths cleared by the Dead. Their work means so much to me. We weren't going to release any new music until later this year, but in honor of Bob Weir, who's crossed over to the next life and leaves behind a musical legacy that will be treasured for as long as people listen to music, I wanted to put this out now, so here's an early look at what we got up to last fall between tours. It's got Mikaela Davis on harp, Rob Jost on bass, George Douglas on the hammered dulcimer — his son plays in the Mountain Goats — and then the usual suspects: me, Matt Douglas, and Jon Wurster – holding down the rest. You can pay what you like on Bandcamp, believe it if you need it, or leave it if you dare; 100% of the proceeds on this single will go to the American Cancer Society.

Thanks, Bob Weir, for all those "Jack Straw"s that're always right there when I need 'em. Your work lives on. Travel safely home.
