The department of Vichada is the land of rivers, where they act as highways, food sources, and most importantly, swimming holes! 🏊‍♀️ My friend Camil took me swimming at el Rio Bita, which begins in Vichada's capital city of Puerto Carreño and runs nearly the entire length of the department!

Have y'all ever heard of an "alborhada?" Because I certainly hadn't... until I was a part of one myself! Basically, on the first day of celebrations in the city of Puerto Carreño, Vichada, people gather together around 4 (!!) in the morning to wake up the rest of town and start celebrating! Motorbikes are ridden around town, musica llanera is blasted at full volume, and there's plenty of rumba to go around. It was definitely an unforgettable experience -- sorry mom!

Han oído hablar alguna vez de una "alborhada"? Porque yo desde luego no... hasta que participé en una! Básicamente, el primer día de las celebraciones en Puerto Carreño, la Vichada, la gente se reúne alrededor de las 4 (!!) de la mañana para despertar al resto del pueblo y empezar a celebrar. Se pasean en moto por la ciudad, la música llanera suena a todo volumen y hay rumba para todos. Fue sin duda una experiencia inolvidable. Lo siento, mamá!

Do you know the legend of the Amazonian River Dolphin? Locals say the dolphins are shapeshifters, taking on human form to seduce woman. One version of the story says that on celebratory nights, a mysterious stranger will arrive at the party, wearing a stingray as a hat, a snake as a belt, and fish as shoes on his feet. He plays music and dances until he's captured the attention of the prettiest girl in the room, ultimately luring her back with him into the river.

This legend takes on many different forms throughout the Amazon, but I think the biggest lesson is to never trust a man in a stingray hat! Conoces la leyenda del delfín rosado? Los lugareños dicen que los delfines son cambiaformas y adoptan forma humana para seducir a las mujeres. Una versión de la historia cuenta que, en las noches de fiesta, un misterioso desconocido llega a la celebración con un sombrero de raya, un cinturón de serpiente y zapatos de pez. Toca música y baila hasta que capta la atención de la chica más guapa, a quien finalmente se lleva consigo al río.

Esta leyenda se manifiesta de muchas maneras en el Amazonas, pero creo que la mayor lección es: nunca confíes en un hombre con un sombrero de raya! Por cierto, la segunda foto es una hermosa obra de arte de mi amigo Mario, quien comparte más de su trabajo en mi video reciente sobre el Amazonas.

Colombia's Amazonian city of Leticia is often called "Las Tres Fronteras," or the "Three Borders" because it's located right on the border of Colombia, Peru, and Brasil! That means you can grab breakfast, lunch, and dinner in three different countries 🇨🇴🇵🇪🇧🇷

Went a little MIA there for a bit -- between traveling and editing the time got away from me! But that means I've got TONS of videos to come from my travels through Colombia, starting with one of the most anticipated departments of all... Amazonas!

There are so many stories that could be told in the Amazon, from indigenous traditions to extreme environments to the power of the mighty Amazon River.

But the story that captivated me most was that of life across borders -- a story that feels especially relevant right now as an American who loves Latin America. While we've assigned the Amazon River the role of dividing countries, in the deep Amazon itself, it has long acted as a highway, connecting people rather than dividing them.

And yes... I did swim in it! If you want to see that adventure, you'll just have to go watch the video!

Estuve un poco ausente por un tiempo, entre viajar y editar, el tiempo se me pasó volando! Pero eso significa que tengo muchísimos videos de mis viajes por Colombia, empezando por uno de los departamentos más esperados de todos: Amazonas!

Hay tantas historias que se podrían contar en la Amazonía, desde tradiciones indígenas hasta entornos extremos y el poder del majestuoso río Amazonas.

Pero la historia que más me cautivó fue la de la vida más allá de las fronteras, una historia que me parece especialmente relevante ahora mismo como estadounidense que ama Latinoamérica. Si bien le hemos atribuido al río Amazonas el papel de dividir países, en la propia Amazonía, durante mucho tiempo ha actuado como una autopista, conectando a las personas en lugar de dividirlas.

Y sí... nadé en él! Si quieren ver esa aventura, tendrán que ver el video!
