NEWS ROUNDUP: Insecurity, Political Tension, and Protests
In the last 24 hours, insecurity has once again taken centre stage across Nigeria, raising fresh concerns about safety and stability nationwide.
Here’s your evening News Roundup:
BOKO HARAM ULTIMATUM
Boko Haram has issued a 72-hour ultimatum over 416 abducted victims in Borno State, including women and children from Ngoshe, Borno State demanding a ₦5 billion ransom and warning they may move the captives if their demands are not met.
Question: What should the government do, negotiate or apply force?
PLATEAU AGAIN
In Plateau State, coordinated attacks in Riyom and Barkin Ladi left at least six people dead and several others injured, with residents alleging prior warnings about suspicious movements that went unaddressed.
Question: Why have early warnings from communities often failed to prevent these attacks? Plus, the attacks have continued despite President Tinubu's recent visit to the state. Any surprise?
KWARA BASE ATTACK
Suspected Ansaru fighters attacked a military base in Kwara in the early hours of today, killing soldiers and carting away motorcycles and a gun truck, raising concerns about the spread of insurgent activities beyond traditional hotspots.
Question: Is insecurity taking a strong hold in Kwara?
ADC YOUTH PROTEST
In politics, youths of the African Democratic Congress today stormed the Independent National Electoral Commission office in Lagos, protesting what they describe as interference and demanding accountability over the party’s leadership crisis. They sought the resignation of INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan.
Question: Should Amupitan resign?
POLICE PENSION PROTEST
In Abuja, retired police officers blocked the Presidential Villa gate, insisting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu sign the Police Exit Bill to remove them from the Contributory Pension Scheme, which they described as unfair and harmful.
Question: Should police be allowed to exit the Contributory Pension Scheme?

Alleged Medical Negligence: MDCN Suspends Three Doctors Over Death of Chimamanda Adichie’s Son
The Medical and Dental Practitioners Council of Nigeria Investigation Panel has suspended Dr. Tunde Majekodunmi and two other doctors over alleged medical negligence in the treatment of 21-month-old Nkanu Adichie-Esege.
Dr. Majekodunmi, Medical Director of Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, alongside anesthesiologist Dr. Titus Ogundare and Dr. Atinuke Uwajeh of Atlantis Pediatric Hospital, are barred from medical practice pending the outcome of proceedings before the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal.
The child, son of renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Dr. Ivara Esege, died on January 7, 2026, after receiving treatment at Atlantis Hospital and undergoing procedures at Euracare in Lagos.
According to the panel, a prima facie case of negligence was established against the three doctors, while ten others face allegations of professional misconduct. Eight doctors were cleared after reviewing written and oral testimonies.
The panel concluded its investigation during its 25th session held in Abuja in February 2026, after examining complaints and counter-affidavits from the 21 doctors involved.
