🔐 10 Hard-Earned Lessons for Securing Your IoT Devices
After years of helping companies protect their connected ecosystems, here's what we've learned in the trenches:
1. Change Those Default Credentials – Seriously
Too many breaches start with "admin/admin123." First thing out of the box: change default passwords to something unique and complex. Factory settings are an open invitation.
2. Network Segmentation is Your Best Friend
Put IoT devices on a separate network from critical systems. When a smart thermostat got compromised at one site, segmentation kept attackers from financial data. That isolation saved millions.
3. Keep Firmware Updated
We've patched vulnerabilities in devices running the same firmware for 3+ years. Set up automated updates where possible, and quarterly reviews for manual updates.
4. Never Transmit Sensitive Data Unprotected
If your device sends credentials or API keys, use local processing or secure VPN tunnels. Keep sensitive data on-premises when possible.
5. Implement Secure Local Storage
IoT devices store credentials and keys locally. Always encrypt this data at rest using HSMs or TPMs when available. A stolen device shouldn't hand over your network keys.
6. Disable Unnecessary Features and Ports
Every open port is a potential entry point. We've hardened hundreds of devices by turning off unused features – remote access, UPnP, unused protocols.
7. Use Strong Authentication Beyond Passwords
Multi-factor authentication isn't just for laptops. More IoT devices now support MFA, certificate-based authentication, or biometrics. Use them.
8. Monitor Traffic Patterns
Normal IoT devices have predictable behavior. When a device suddenly scans your network at 3 AM, that's a red flag. Anomaly detection catches compromises early.
9. Vendor Security Matters
Research the manufacturer's security track record before purchasing. Do they release regular updates? How do they handle vulnerabilities? Avoid vendors who ignore security.
10. Plan for End-of-Life From Day One
When a device hits EOL and stops getting updates, it needs replacement or isolation. Securely wipe data on decommissioned devices too.
Bottom line: IoT security is about layering multiple defenses. Every device is a potential doorway into your network.
What's your biggest IoT security challenge? 👇

🌐 The Future of Indoor Radar — Seeing the Invisible
At Gradient Technologies, we’ve been watching (and building!) the quiet revolution happening in indoor radar sensing, and it’s fascinating how this field is reshaping what’s possible inside our homes, workplaces, and industrial environments.
From presence detection and occupancy analytics, to gesture recognition, fall detection, and even vital sign monitoring, radar technologies are stepping beyond traditional communication and becoming our digital sixth sense.
What’s especially interesting is the diversity of technologies powering this shift:
⚙️ mmWave FMCW radars offering high-resolution spatial awareness
📡 UWB / Impulse systems delivering centimeter-level precision through walls and clutter
💡 Wi-Fi sensing turning existing access points into motion detectors
❤️ Bio-radar enabling contactless monitoring of heart rate and breathing
Each has its niche, together, they’re creating smarter, safer, and more responsive environments.
At Gradient, we help companies turn these complex technologies into real, deployable products, whether that means custom RF design, embedded firmware, or sensor data intelligence for IoT and automation systems.
If you’re exploring how radar or RF sensing could enhance your next product, we’d love to chat and brainstorm ideas.
Let’s make the invisible visible.

For Energy & Power Product Developers
🔋 Building the future of clean energy? We know the challenges you're facing - because we've solved them before:
💡 What’s your biggest energy challenge right now?
* Solar systems that lose 30% efficiency on cloudy days?
* Battery packs that overheat or degrade faster than expected?
* EV chargers that can't handle grid fluctuations?
* Power inverters causing harmonic distortion issues?
* Energy harvesting that barely powers a LED, let alone your product?
* Outdoor electronics that work great... until the first rainstorm?
Drop a comment - we'd love to hear your specific challenge! 👇
✅ Here's How We Turn Those Headaches Into Success Stories:
Smart Energy Harvesting → Multi-source capture (solar + kinetic + thermal) that actually works → MPPT algorithms that squeeze every milliwatt from available power → Circuit designs so efficient, your battery life will surprise you
Power Electronics That Perform → Inverters with <3% THD (your grid will thank you) → Battery management that predicts issues before they happen → Charging controllers built for the real world, not just lab conditions
Built to Last Anywhere → IP68 enclosures that maintain performance (not just survive) → Thermal solutions for -40°C to +85°C operation → EMI/EMC designs that pass certification on the first try.
End-to-End Certification Support → UL 1741, IEEE 1547 grid compliance expertise → FCC Part 15 for wireless-enabled systems → Full environmental validation (we literally torture-test your products)
Real Talk: We've taken products from "garage prototype" to "powering thousands of homes." Whether it's a 5W solar phone charger or a 50kW commercial charging station, we know how to make power electronics that actually work in the wild.
Ready to stop fighting physics and start winning? Let’s solve your power puzzle together!
