California Dreamin’ takes audiences on a colorful musical journey through Southern California's memorable '60s & '70s hippie anthems and radio hits. With a special emphasis on the great singer/songwriters and bands who came through Laurel Canyon at that time, the players share stories throughout their show of how these artists changed the course of American pop music, bringing this era of great music back to life.

California Dreamin’ is Annie Sims vocals, keyboards, Keith Baxter on vocals, guitars and Gil Sabatini on vocals and bass - performing with their own custom backing tracks for a full-band sound. These singers for the Tom & Jerry in New York television series blend exquisite group harmonies, vintage costumes, and a palpable love for the music into a fun-filled, danceable time for all. California Dreamin' is a Flower Power Rock Experience that will transport you back to the days of peace, love, and rock & roll!

George Gershwin was an American composer and pianist whose compositions spanned popular, jazz and classical genres. Among his best-known works are the orchestral compositions "Rhapsody in Blue" (1924) and "An American in Paris" (1928), the songs "Swanee" (1919) and "Fascinating Rhythm" (1924), the jazz standards "Embraceable You" (1928) and "I Got Rhythm" (1930), and the opera Porgy and Bess (1935), which included the hit "Summertime".

And now, let's welcome our artist this month, sharing a special program on The Life and Music of George Gershwin, the Nashville Jazz Workshop. The organization was founded in 1998 as the Nashville Jazz Institute by Lori Mechem and Roger Spencer, and opened with a handful of students. The program was based on a workshop model developed by Mechem and Spencer growing out of their dissatisfaction with traditional academic jazz education.

Let's welcome our Nashville concert artist for July, The Matt Davich Big Band!

Come listen to some Big Band music, then enjoy the beautiful gardens of Cheekwood!

Big band music originated during the early 1910s and dominated jazz in the early 1940s when swing was most popular.

Big bands started as accompaniment for dancing. In contrast to the typical jazz emphasis on improvisation, big bands relied on written compositions and arrangements.
