Blue Jay

The Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata) is a large, intelligent songbird native to eastern and central North America. Its name "jay" comes from its noisy, chattering "jay-jay" call, which early European settlers noted.
It belongs to the Corvidae family, making it a close relative of crows and ravens, and it shares their notable intelligence. Historically, Blue Jays have a mixed reputation. They are admired for their striking blue plumage (which is actually an optical illusion caused by light scattering, not blue pigment) and tight family bonds. However, they are also known for their aggressive and loud behavior, often driving other birds away from feeders and occasionally raiding nests.
A significant part of their natural history involves their relationship with oak trees. They have a habit of collecting and burying acorns for later, a practice called caching. As they don't always return to retrieve them, they are one of nature's most important planters, credited with helping to spread oak forests across the continent after the last glacial period.
