*CRYING FOR SPIRITUAL AWAKENING*

My name is Gbile Akanni.
I came here because of the Ministers’ Conference organized by the Seminary, to also make my own contribution.

_What Does It Mean to Cry in Biblical Terms?_

When someone notices that things are going wrong spiritually, when there is no longer advancement in the Spirit, when confusion and darkness seem to cover everywhere, then it becomes a burden of prayer.
A Yoruba adage says: “If a man misses his way, he will surely recognize where he started from.” As ministers of God, when everything becomes confusing and darkness seems to overshadow the Church, it calls for deep crying unto God for awakening and revival through His Word and Spirit.
Crying for revival means seeking God with one heart and one soul, asking for divine visitation, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and for God Himself to take over His work in our hands.
However, before we cry for revival, we must discover where things went wrong. The Bible says:
*“If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me.” — Psalm 66:18*
We must therefore identify the causes of lukewarmness, spiritual dryness, and failure in ministry.

_Why is there confusion in our world when God has called us “the light of the world” and “a city set on a hill” that cannot be hidden?_

If light is present and darkness still prevails, then questions must be asked. That is what this conference is all about. We need revival and spiritual awakening. The Lord must not turn His back on us, because if God withdraws His support from a man, who else can sustain him? This is why ministers from different denominations gather together to pray for revival — revival in the Church, revival in our nations, and revival wherever God desires His Word to reach.

_Are We Slumbering, Sleeping, or Already Dead?_

All three conditions are connected. A man who is slumbering cannot clearly see what God is doing. Sleeping begins with slumbering, and prolonged spiritual sleep eventually leads to death.
When a person begins to drift away from righteousness and loses fervency in walking with God, spiritual decline has already begun. Jesus said:
*“Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.” — Matthew 5:6*

When a man is no longer hungry or thirsty for God, he is already dying spiritually.
Imagine a man who has not been hungry for food for two months. Even when delicious food is brought before him, he still says he is not hungry. Would we fold our hands and watch? Such a person is close to death. Likewise, those who are no longer hungry for God, who no longer feel conviction after sinning, are in desperate need of revival. Whether preacher, deacon, choir member, or prophet — once the passion for God’s Word and the fear of God are gone, revival is urgently needed.

*Ephesians 5:14 “Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.”*

Those who are sleeping, slumbering, or spiritually dead all need awakening so that Christ may give them light.
Today many carry great titles in the Church, yet the life of Christ is absent. Greed, sin, compromise, and hypocrisy have entered the Church. If God does not send revival, spiritual death will spread further. That is why we pray:

*“Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?” — Psalm 85:6*

*Psalm 85: A Cry for Revival*

*Psalm 85:1–8 (KJV) “LORD, thou hast been favourable unto thy land: thou hast brought back the captivity of Jacob.*

*Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of thy people, thou hast covered all their sin. Selah.*

*Thou hast taken away all thy wrath: thou hast turned thyself from the fierceness of thine anger.*

*Turn us, O God of our salvation, and cause thine anger toward us to cease.*

*Wilt thou be angry with us for ever? wilt thou draw out thine anger to all generations?*

*Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?*

*Shew us thy mercy, O LORD, and grant us thy salvation.*

*I will hear what God the LORD will speak: for he will speak peace unto his people, and to his saints: but let them not turn again to folly."*

Turning away from God is foolishness. Anyone who hears God’s warning and refuses to listen has lost spiritual understanding.
How long are we going to live on this earth? Why should we destroy eternity because of temporary earthly pleasures?
If God does not encounter such people and call them back, they remain under His wrath.

_What Causes People to Lose Their Salvation?_

Sin.
The Bible says: *“He that committeth sin is of the devil.” — 1 John 3:8*

No one can belong to God and continue comfortably in sin. You cannot walk in light and darkness at the same time.
Anyone who deliberately plans to continue in sin is turning away from God.

_When and Where Did the Church miss It?_

We may not know the exact moment, but decline begins when: The Word of God is no longer honored. Service to God becomes a burden.
Preachers themselves become guilty of sin.
Choristers sing while living in compromise. Secret sins are covered up.The Bible says:

*“Your iniquities have separated between you and your God.” — Isaiah 59:2*

Spiritual decline often happens gradually.
Salvation removes certain things from a man’s life. But when someone begins to return to what God once delivered him from, he becomes like:
*“The dog is turned to his own vomit again.” — 2 Peter 2:22*

Hidden sin is especially dangerous. It silently weakens ministry and pushes the Spirit of God away.

_How Does Backsliding Begin?_

It begins personally and quietly. Prayer time is replaced with entertainment.
Reverence for God’s Word disappears. Spiritual warnings are ignored. Secret compromise is tolerated.
A person may still preach powerfully or sing beautifully while already drifting away from God inwardly. The Example of Samson; Samson was mightily anointed by God. Enemies fell before him easily. Yet when sin entered his life, he gradually lost sight of his divine assignment.
Despite warnings from his parents, he persisted in disobedience until he eventually fell into captivity through Delilah.

Everyone who turns away from God eventually enters bondage. Backsliding is a slippery path. It is easier to fall spiritually than to rise again. What takes years to build spiritually can collapse within days through sin.
Revival Requires Deep Prayer
Revival is difficult because spiritual death comes easily.
It is always better to prevent spiritual decline than to restore a fallen life.

_Who Should Pray?_

The burdened and thirsty.
Nobody can truly help a man who does not desire restoration himself.
Jesus said:
*“If any man thirst…” — John 7:37*

Those who recognize that their spiritual lives are no longer what they should be must cry sincerely unto God.
The Lost Axe Head — A Picture of Lost Grace
2 Kings 6:1–7: The sons of the prophets were cutting wood when the axe head fell into the water. Without the iron axe head, the wooden handle became useless.
Many people today are carrying only the handle spiritually. The power, grace, and sharpness are gone.
The young prophet cried:
*“Alas, master! for it was borrowed.”*

Everything we have — grace, gifts, ministry, life itself — was borrowed from God. We are stewards, not owners.
The prophet asked: *“Where fell it?”*

That is the key question!

Some lost their spiritual edge through adultery.

Some through greed and love of money.

Some through pride, bitterness, compromise, or worldly pleasure.

Revival begins when a man honestly tells God where he fell.

*Proverbs 28:13: “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.”*

There can be no restoration without honesty and repentance. When the axe head was recovered, the man was told: *“Take it up to thee.”* When God restores a man, he must guard what has been restored and never allow it to fall again.

*Sin Pulls Men Down*

“ *Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.” — Proverbs 14:34*

Sin never promotes a man spiritually. It destroys glory, weakens destiny, and opens doors to Satan.

Ecclesiastes 10:8
*“Whoso breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him.”*

God surrounds His people with protection, but sin breaks the hedge. Many young people today are digging spiritual pits for themselves through immorality, compromise, and careless living. Instead of preparing for God’s purpose, they are destroying their destinies.

_What Happens If We Refuse Revival?_

Proverbs 29:1
*“He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.”*

If the Church refuses repentance, greater danger lies ahead. That is why we must cry unto God now.

_What About Preachers Who Preach Well but Live Wrongly?_
Jesus said:
*“Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven.” — Matthew 7:21*

Some preach powerfully but live contrary to the Gospel.
Listen to whatever aligns with Scripture, but do not follow their sinful example.
Follow only those who are genuinely following Christ.
Jesus Christ is the Way.

_A Final Word to Politicians and Leaders_

God’s Word is for everyone — politicians, businessmen, ministers, and ordinary people alike. Any leader who covers sin today may lose honor tomorrow. Sin cuts short glory. That is why everyone must repent and cry unto God for mercy, awakening, and revival.

May God revive His Church again. Amen.
