Choosing Your Uni
In 1975, when Griffith University opened its doors in Brisbane with 451 students, it did something no other Australian university had done. Of the four schools it launched with, two were national firsts: the School of Australian Environmental Studies, and the School of Modern Asian Studies.
Think about how that looked at the time. The oil shocks had just hit, nobody was talking about climate in the mainstream yet, and "Asia literacy" was decades away from being a national priority. A brand-new Queensland university decided both of those things mattered enough to build schools around them from day one.
Fifty years on, that early bet looks pretty sharp. Griffith placed equal 4th out of 2,152 universities in the 2025 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, which measure performance against the UN Sustainable Development Goals. It sits at 49th globally for sustainability in the QS 2025 rankings, 7th in Australia. The Griffith Asia Institute is one of the country's most active voices on regional policy.
It's also produced 82 Olympians, including Emma McKeon and Cameron McEvoy, which tells you something about the scale and breadth of what goes on across the five campuses.
Griffith will be running a deep-dive session during the expo week, 10 to 17 May. If you're considering Queensland, or you're specifically drawn to sustainability, Asia studies, health, or sport, it's an hour well spent.

Picture a marine biology tutorial where the field trip isn't a textbook or a tank. It's the Great Barrier Reef, a boat ride from campus. That's James Cook University. JCU sits in Townsville and Cairns, making it the only Australian university properly inside the tropics. The location isn't a marketing line, it's the research advantage. JCU is world-leading in marine biology, and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies, a partnership with AIMS, ANU, UQ, UWA, and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, is headquartered on the Townsville campus.
If you're serious about coral reef science, tropical ecology, or marine conservation, this is one of the few places on the planet where the research and the ecosystem are the same postcode. But JCU isn't only marine. It's the university that trains a huge share of the doctors, nurses, teachers, and engineers who work across northern Australia, including in communities that genuinely struggle to attract them.
