It feels like I haven’t posted in a longggg time. Life is just LIFING.

My younger sister gave birth to her second child yesterday, a baby girl, and I’m overjoyed. I went to the hospital to see her. I took these pictures at the hospital (they’re screenshots btw)

My hair has been in a bun for the past one week. Yeah, I added some kinky extensions to the ends of my twists to make it longer so I can pack it up instead of covering my hair once it started getting old. I’ll be washing my hair this week though.

I also got the Aphogee Two-Step Protein Treatment and the Balancing Moisturizer. I genuinely can’t wait to try them. I’ve been hesitant and skeptical, but I think it’s time to try.

As for my tests, my ferritin levels are normal. My iron level was above normal. I don’t know if it’s because I started taking iron supplements two weeks before going for the test, but yeah, my iron level was high.

Lastly, my vitamin D level is okay, but not really sufficient since it barely crossed into the normal range.

Since I’ve checked these, I can only say it’s stress. Though I still intend to run some other tests, I just want to focus on my health generally.

Overall, I’m not sick, I’ve just been apathetic. Just tired.

Natural hair journeys are personal. That is one thing you should know.

Now, if I were to start my natural hair journey all over again, these are the things I would do.

SIMPLE THINGS TO KNOW

1. Know your hair type

Knowing your hair type helps with techniques, styling, and managing expectations. You don’t have to compare your hair’s result with an entirely different hair type. That is honestly the main benefit.

2. Know your strand width

Is your hair fine, medium, or thick? Knowing this helps with styling, product choice, and how you handle your hair to retain length. It also helps you understand how certain hairstyles will look on you and saves you years of frustration from trying to force your hair to behave a certain way.

3. Shrinkage is NORMAL. It is not a curse. Shrinkage does not mean your hair is not growing.

BASIC PRODUCTS YOU NEED

As a beginner, you honestly do not need a million products. Start simple. As you begin to understand your hair, you can adjust things later.

1. Cleanser

You need a sulfate free hydrating shampoo and a clarifying shampoo.

Hydrating shampoos cleanse your hair without stripping it too much. They are great for regular wash days, especially if you wash weekly or every two weeks, which i highly recommend.

Clarifying shampoos deeply cleanse the scalp, remove heavy buildup and excess oils, and help your hair absorb moisture better afterward. They can be drying, so ideally use them once a month.

You can also use a sulfate shampoo or even clay to clarify your scalp.

2. Deep conditioner

You need both a moisturizing deep conditioner and a protein deep conditioner / treatment.

A moisturizing deep conditioner keeps your hair soft, manageable, and nourished. It helps with moisture and elasticity and should be used on every wash day. You can also alternate it with a regular conditioner depending on your hair’s condition.

Protein treatments strengthen the hair, reduce breakage, and help revive curls. They are especially helpful before long term protective styles, especially styles with extensions.

Balance is important, so learn to listen to your hair. Personally, I do a protein treatment every 5 to 6 weeks.

(Ps: I’d say know your hair’s porosity. That way you know if you should do a protein treatment every month and light protein every 2 weeks.)

Deep conditioners and protein treatments should be applied after cleansing and mainly on the strands, not the scalp. Cover your hair with a shower cap, and leave them on for about 30 minutes before rinsing with warm water.
If you can afford it, get a steam cap.

- Warm water is great because it helps prepare the hair for the next step, but if you have high porosity hair, cold water can also help.

3. Leave in conditioner

This is applied after wash day and left in the hair. It helps soften the hair, smooth the cuticle, and improve manageability.

4. Oil, butter, or grease

This part is honestly trial and error.

You can do:
Leave in + oil + grease
Leave in + grease
Leave in + butter

It really depends on what helps your hair retain moisture best.

ROUTINE

Your routine can honestly make or break your hair journey. If healthy hair growth is your goal, consistency matters.

Wash your hair every week or every two weeks. Frequent washing actually makes natural hair easier to manage.

Get a satin bonnet, silk scarf, or satin pillowcase to protect your hair while sleeping.

Invest in hair scissors and trim only when necessary. You can also visit a professional.

Get a spray bottle. It helps when remoisturizing your hair.

If you wear braids or twists for more than a week, moisturize them once or twice weekly. If the style only lasts a week, there is usually no need to remoisturize.

Reduce over manipulation as much as possible. This is one of the biggest reasons people struggle with length retention.

If your goal is to retain length, focus more on low manipulation styles using your natural hair like twists, braids, and cornrows.
Ps: you can use extensions, but they can weigh your hair down. So, I’ll say, more of your hair. 70/30
Pleaseeeeeeeee avoid tight hairstyles.

- Mini twists and braids can stay in for about a month if your focus is growth and length retention. Less manipulation gives your hair a better chance to thrive.

That said, you can still have fun with your hair. You do not have to β€œhide” it all the time.

You can alternate between long term protective styles and loose, low tension styles like twist outs, wash and gos, and wearing your hair out.

For example:

Month 1:
Mini twists for one month.
Wash every two weeks.
Condition and moisturize with leave in conditioner and oil.
Moisturize weekly.

Month 2:
Install Regular sized twists using a styling product.
Wear them for one week, then unravel them into a twist out the next week. That’s a whole seven days with the twist out style.
After that, wash your hair.

The next two weeks, you can wear cornrows before doing another wash day.

This routine works best if your hair already has some length.

If your hair is shorter, simply wash, condition, and enjoy styling your hair. You can still wear twists and twist outs.

MORE IMPORTANT TIPS

Be gentle when taking down hairstyles to avoid breakage.

Do not comb dry hair.

Do not handle your hair aggressively when you are angry or frustrated.

Avoid rat tail combs for detangling. Use your fingers, a wide tooth comb, or a detangling brush instead.

Scalp massages are also great. You can do them for about 5 minutes, 3 to 4 times a week.

Drink water.
Eat enough protein.
Take care of your health.

Healthy hair starts from within.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

I also have an affordable ebook with a 90-day length challenge, linked in my bio.

Summary:
Wash every two weeks
Always deep condition and moisturize
Avoid tight hairstyles.
Avoid over manipulating your hair
Enjoy.
