It always surprises people when they see petrol stations switching to solar energy. I used to wonder tooβ€”if a fuel station, which sells fuel, can’t afford to power their generator, how much more an average person?
Let’s not forget: fuel stations are not built by poor people. These are businesses that require capital and constant operational efficiency.
When we visited Ekiti State for a solar water pump project, I noticed something interestingβ€”most of the small fueling stations had already installed solar systems. That says a lot about the current reality in Nigeria.
Let me share a short story about one of our clients, Mr. Wasiu, who owns a petrol station. Last year, he reached out to us, interested in getting a solar system for his station. He admitted that he had been holding back because he always heard radio adverts saying solar systems don’t last more than a year.
I told him that wasn't true. The performance and durability of a solar system depend on the quality of materials used and who installs it.
We recommended a 48V system with four tubular batteries for optimal performance, but he said his budget only allowed for a two-battery setup. We agreed to proceed with that, with the condition that he would only run one pump on solar.
Six months later, he called us, very impressed. He said:
The solar system had saved them multiple times when the generator failed.
Customers often took 15–20 minutes to show up, meaning they had to turn the generator off and on frequently, which stressed the attendants.
With solar, there was no noise, no fuel stress, and no waiting to restart the generatorβ€”just peace of mind.
Boom! Mr. Wasiu called againβ€”this time to ask how he could expand the system. We told him he needed to add more batteries and upgrade the inverter. The very next day, he made the payment, and we upgraded the system.
The biggest lesson here is simple:
Nobody can truly afford the current fuel prices in Nigeria.
Solar energy works – and it can be tailored to your budget.
