45 years away, 18 of those years, she was behind a stopwatch. Now, it’s her turn on the blocks. ⏱️🏊‍♀️

When her son, Tristan, graduates high school and heads to Columbia University to swim this fall, Kathy McCain, age 62, won’t be hanging up her timer or tossing heat sheets anytime soon. After a 45-year break from swimming in the pool, she’s officially back, and already making waves at meets.

Before her son heads to Uni, they took part in a special 10K relay fundraiser on April 25th with their Hill Country Aquatics teammates, where she shared the lanes with her son, Tristan in support of blood cancer research. “I’m enjoying showing my son that swimming is fitness is for life.” said Kathy about the event, “The 10k for blood cancer swim was so much fun!!!”

With the support of her Hill Country Aquatics teammates, Her coaches - Amy Marsh and Lizzy Smith, she’s dropping time and gaining confidence fast. Returning to competition at 62, she chose the exact same events she swam in high school: the 500 Free, 100 Fly, and 200 IM. The result? Three 1st-place finishes and a spot in the Top 50 national rankings in her first meet back! 🤯

"After decades of supporting my son at his meets, now my husband gets to come to mine," she says. Her husband even served as her counter for that first 500 at her first meet. Now, that’s love, if you ask us. 🥹 (Ask for more info about husband support).

Way to go Kathy, shinning example of a “swim mom”❣️

As we dive into more summer outdoor swimming, it’s crucial for swimmers to prioritize sun safety! 🌡️ July marks US Safety Month, and here are key tips to protect yourself from harmful UV rays:

1. Sunscreen is a Must! 🧴 Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher before diving in. Don’t forget to reapply every two hours, especially after swimming!
2. Seek Shade When Possible ☀️ Whenever you take a break, look for shaded areas to cool off and reduce sun exposure on deck, especially at swim meets.
3. Wear Protective Gear 🕶️ Don a wide-brimmed hat, UV-blocking sunglasses, and consider a swim shirt with UPF protection for added defense against the sun.
4. Hydration is Key! 💧 Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your swim to stay hydrated and help your skin remain healthy.
5. Timing Matters ⏰ Try to swim during the early morning or late afternoon when the sun’s rays are less intense.

Let's enjoy the water while prioritizing our health! 💙 Share your favorite sun safety tips in the comments below! ⬇️

4,000 yards in a single-day meet at 75?!

Minnesota Masters Swim Club member Bill Durell completed the maximum yardage possible across six individual events at the Swimming Up the River City meet (3,950) before doing a relay for his grand total. For those counting at home, that was the 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 200 breaststroke, 400 IM, 500 freestyle, and 1000 freestyle before doing a 200 freestyle relay.

“This is a rare opportunity for swimmers to set a record that cannot be exceeded, as 3,950 yards is the maximum distance allowed by a six-individual-event, single-day meet,” Bill says. “Who will accept the challenge?”

Father’s Day came early for Adam Brown.

At Spring Nationals, he swam with both his father, Paul, and his daughter, Lucy, on a mixed 200 medley relay. (Their fourth swimmer was an “adopted daughter” for the meet.) The moment meant everything to the family.

"As a son, you always want to spend time with your dad, especially as you get older,” Adam says. “Going to nationals for me is like 50 family visits wrapped into one weekend. We travel together, hotel, dinner—it is just time that I will always cherish. My dad is my hero and my biggest fan, but at nationals, I get to be his biggest fan. Now that my daughter is old enough to come along, it brings so much more joy. The relay was the cherry on top ... even if I jumped a little early!"
