Interesting facts about India:

During British rule in India, the colonial government was deeply concerned about the enormous number of venomous cobras in Delhi, which posed a constant danger to the population (and to the rulers themselves).
To address the root of the problem, they decided to rely on capitalism and economic motivation: They established a bounty on the heads of cobras. Anyone who brought a dead cobra to the authorities would receive a monetary reward.

Initially, the strategy worked remarkably well. Numerous snakes were killed, and the cobra population in Delhi began to decline.
However, the locals soon realized that the bounty was too good a source of income to pass up once the wild snakes were depleted. So they began to do the only logically profitable thing: secretly breeding cobras in their homes with the sole purpose of killing them, handing them over to the British, and collecting the money.

When the British noticed the drastic and suspicious increase in snake deliveries (despite the streets seemingly being empty), they realized their mistake and immediately canceled the reward program.
At that point, breeders found themselves with hundreds of cobras crammed into their homes, no longer worth a penny, but costing them food and care to maintain. The solution was obvious: they opened the cages and released them all into the streets.
Delhi found itself with a cobra population infinitely higher than when the operation began.

The Cobra Effect is still studied today in economics, politics, and management to explain perverse incentives. It demonstrates how a poorly designed incentive can push people to make the original problem worse in order to get the reward.

Hi! Since yesterday, an unlimited fundraising campaign has been running through an American NGO called IDRF. You can find the link in the Indian Slums videos, which provide information about their work in India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. It's an organization selected by YouTube, so it's a surefire way to provide tangible help with very low running costs. Nothing passes through my hands or YouTube's. I'm really happy to have found a way to use this channel's visibility in a positive way. I've done a lot of research over time, but I was never convinced about the transparency of the organizations I found, and I also hoped to be able to help the communities I visited, but unfortunately, it's not that simple. You'll find the link below this video, and I'll update all the others soon. If you can, please donate!
Thanks.

The Indian audience, which had significantly declined over the past six months, has returned to the channel in recent weeks... the videos about Pakistan have piqued their interest. These social dynamics interest me greatly, and I'd love to hear your opinion, if you'd like to share it.

Thanks

Virtual Journey

When I was in Kolkata, I decided to head north to record a video for a covered market I'd found on Google Maps, and then I continued toward the river that divides the city in two. As I walked, a young boy joined me, and we continued on until I found a clearing that led down to the Hooghly River, and it looked interesting. It was a Ghat where people go to take a spiritual bath, but the boy with me warned me it wasn't safe to go there. As always, I ask, "Knife or Gun?" There's a big difference. It most likely separates gangsters from amateur thieves, and it certainly changes the way you get out of a dangerous situation. And he says Gun... I decide to take his advice and continue on, and a few minutes later, next to a police station, there was a body covered in a white sheet. The boy probably knew about a shooting that had occurred shortly before, and the body had been transported near the police station before being taken to a hospital or morgue. The video will be out soon... I didn't turn the camera in that direction with the police there, and I don't think I even have a body shot, but you can hear everything in the conversation.

Degradation suffocates Karachi in neighborhoods where the air is a heavy veil of smoke and decay. Here, open sewers cut into the ground like infected veins, dragging dark sewage just steps from the street food carts, where grease sizzles amid the miasma.
Hand-pickers rummage bare-skinned through mountains of scraps. In the alleys, junk markets display scraps and rusted memories, the only possible trade in a survival economy that transforms poverty into a perpetual, brutal landscape.
