JS Natori (FFM-9), berthed at the Hemi Pier in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, is the ninth Mogami-class frigate of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). The vessel is named after the Natori River, which flows through Natori and Sendai cities in Miyagi Prefecture. It is the second Japanese warship to bear this name, succeeding the Imperial Japanese Navy’s Nagara-class light cruiser Natori, and marks the first time the name has been assigned to a JMSDF vessel.

The Mogami-class frigate serves as a foundation for multilateral technological cooperation and constitutes a key element in the defense and security partnership between Japan and Australia.

Australia has selected a new, upgraded FFM variant based on the Mogami class for the Royal Australian Navy's next-generation general-purpose frigate program. This selection marks a transition to a new phase in Japan-Australia defense cooperation.

Furthermore, Japan's defense equipment cooperation with other nations continues to expand. This is evidenced by the potential export of the new FFM variant to New Zealand, alongside ongoing discussions regarding the potential transfer of Abukuma-class destroyer escorts to the Philippines—though no final agreement on the latter has been finalized.

Future developments in Japan-Australia cooperation and the broader security framework within the Indo-Pacific region remain critical areas of observation.

逸見岸壁（神奈川県横須賀市）に停泊する「なとり」（JS Natori, FFM-9）は、海上自衛隊のもがみ型護衛艦の9番艦である。艦名は宮城県の名取川に由来する。この名を持つ日本の艦艇としては、旧日本海軍の長良型軽巡洋艦3番艦「名取」に続き2代目であり、海上自衛隊の艦艇としては初の命名となる。

もがみ型護衛艦は多国間における技術協力の基盤を構成しており、日豪の安全保障・防衛協力体制における要素の一つとなっている。

オーストラリア海軍の次期汎用フリゲートとして、もがみ型をベースとした「新型FFM（能力向上型）」が選定された。これにより、日豪の防衛協力は新たな段階へと移行しつつある。

Overseas Training Cruise 2026: Final Preparations Underway
The commencement of the Overseas Training Cruise, designed for the practical professional development of newly commissioned Japan Self-Defense Force officers, is imminent. The training squadron’s core vessels—the training ships JS Kashima (TV-3508) and JS Yamagiri (TV-3515)—have now entered the final phase of preparations for departure.

Unwavering Resolve of the Ensigns
The crew maintains exceptionally high morale, unified by a grim determination to fulfill their noble mission: fostering international goodwill and honing the specialized competencies required of Maritime Self-Defense Force officers.

With the "Gosei" (Five Reflections) etched into their hearts, they prepare to traverse the distant waves. The curtain is about to rise on this storied and traditional overseas voyage.

El inicio del Crucero de Instrucción en Ultramar, diseñado para el desarrollo profesional práctico de los oficiales recién comisionados de las Fuerzas de Autodefensa de Japón, es inminente. Los buques núcleo de la escuadra de instrucción —los buques escuela JS Kashima (TV-3508) y JS Yamagiri (TV-3515)— han entrado ahora en la fase final de preparativos para su partida.

Determinación Inquebrantable de los Alféreces

Following Prime Minister Takaichi’s official visit to Australia in May 2026, defense cooperation between the two nations has entered a new phase that could be described as a "quasi-alliance."

A particularly noteworthy topic in recent discussions is the proposal for Australia to lease submarines from Japan to bridge the capability gap until the deployment of AUKUS-led submarines.

The thrill of cleaving through the waves and feeling the salt air on deck remains as fresh as if it happened yesterday. That experience breathed life into the profound respect for naval history I have carried since my childhood—a passion fueled by reading about the pivotal turning points of the Pacific War:

Pearl Harbor: The surprise strike that signaled the start of hostilities.

Midway: The turning point where the tide of naval supremacy shifted.

Philippine Sea: The devastating blow to naval aviation.

Leyte Gulf: The largest naval battle in history, where the great battleships made their stand.

Guadalcanal: A brutal war of attrition and fierce night engagements.

These items are not merely "collectibles." They are "comrades-in-arms" that have crossed the waves with me, bridging the gap between historical study and the reality of the sea.

【Day 4：波濤を越えた、あの日の感激】
「秘蔵コレクションルーム」公開、第四夜。
今夜は、私自身の「乗艦の記憶」を呼び起こす品々をご紹介します。

Welcome to the third night of my "Private Collection Room" series. Tonight, we shift our perspective to the various "Masu" (traditional wooden sake cups) that adorn my shelves.

This collection carries the refreshing scent of wood, as if capturing the lingering excitement of naval commissioning ceremonies and celebrations. Among them, the "mini-Masu" from the JS Izumo is a particularly rare gem—not only for its scarcity but also for its uniquely charming size.

Each of these cups is infused with prayers of blessing and gratitude for the guardians who protect the seas of Japan.

今夜は少し視点を変えて、棚を彩る海上自衛隊の「升」の数々を。

Commanding the center is the cap from the JMSDF Submarine Training Center. The "SILENT FORCE" lettering, meticulously embroidered in gold thread, embodies the quiet pride and the unwavering resolve of those who venture into the deep. It radiates a sacred aura that only true service-issued gear can possess.

I hope you can feel the overwhelming presence and authentic texture of these pieces through these images.

Thank you so much for your continuous support and wonderful comments.

As Golden Week approaches here in Japan, I have a special project to share. Starting tonight, I will be opening the doors to my private "Collection Room"—the sanctuary behind the lens—over the next five consecutive nights.

The First Night: The Origin of My Archive

Tonight’s focus is the very cornerstone of my journey.
On the wall hangs a 2017 JMSDF Band, Tokyo calendar. This dates back to the tenure of Commander Higuchi, who was personally very kind to me. Looking at it now, I can almost feel the air stirred by his baton, calling forth those vivid, stirring melodies once again.

Displayed on the shelves are my squadron caps. These are not mere souvenirs; they are the "real deal"—authentic pieces imbued with the spirit of those serving on the front lines.

Tomorrow, for [Day 2], we will dive deeper into the memories of the "Steel Whales" (Submarines).
