Today I had the privilege to attend the Outreach Workshop under the National Policy for Rare Diseases (NPRD) organized in collaboration with PGIMER Chandigarh and AIIMS Bathinda. The workshop served as an important academic platform to discuss the challenges, responsibilities, and future directions in the diagnosis and management of rare diseases in India.

The workshop focused on several crucial aspects:
• Rare disease diagnosis pathways
• Multidisciplinary care approaches
• Implementation of the National Policy for Rare Diseases
• Strengthening referral and support systems
• Role of public health in rare disease management

The session began with the Welcome Address by Dr. Rakesh Kakkar, Professor & Head, Department of Community and Family Medicine, AIIMS Bathinda, who highlighted the importance of awareness, timely referral, and coordinated healthcare systems.

We were honored to hear the Special Address by Shri Prem Chander Dalakoti, Consultant, DGHS, New Delhi.

The scientific sessions were highly informative:
• NPRD Scope and Beneficiaries – Dr. Ankita Kankaria, PGIMER Chandigarh
• When to Suspect Genetic Disorders – Dr. Inusha Panigrahi, PGIMER Chandigarh
• Genetic Testing for Various Rare Disease Phenotypes – Dr. Priyanka Srivastava, PGIMER Chandigarh
• MLPA: Advantages and Applications – Dr. Preeti Khetarpal, Central University of Punjab

Workshops like these remind us that behind every rare disease is a patient, a family, and a lifelong struggle — and as healthcare professionals, our responsibility is not only to diagnose but also to ensure awareness, accessibility, and compassionate care.
Grateful to be part of this meaningful academic initiative aligned with the vision of the National Policy for Rare Diseases, India.

Fungal Infections Are Rising — Are We Ready for the AI Era in Diagnosis?

Recently, I had the opportunity to attend an insightful webinar titled “Fungal Infections: From Diagnosis to AI-Driven Treatment” organized by MedBound Academy, delivered by Dr. Monika Saxena (MBBS, MD), an experienced clinician and academician.

The session highlighted an important reality — fungal infections are becoming increasingly common and challenging to manage, particularly with the emergence of drug-resistant dermatophytes.

💡 Key Insights from the Webinar:

🔬 Current epidemiology of fungal infections in India
🧫 Clinical presentation and diagnostic approach to dermatophytosis
⚠️ Growing concern of drug-resistant dermatophyte infections
🏛️ Government initiatives and public health responses addressing fungal diseases
🤖 The emerging role of Artificial Intelligence in fungal infection detection and treatment planning

Working in the Department of Microbiology, I regularly encounter the laboratory side of infectious disease diagnosis — from microscopy and staining techniques to fungal culture interpretation. Sessions like this reinforce how laboratory diagnostics, clinical practice, and emerging technologies like AI can work together to strengthen infectious disease management.

Continuous learning and staying updated with evolving trends in medical mycology and diagnostic innovation remain essential for improving patient care.

Grateful to MedBound Academy and Dr. Monika Saxena for such an informative and thought-provoking academic session.

On National Science Day, I pause not just to celebrate discoveries—but the people whose courage to question, experiment, and persist laid the foundation of India’s scientific identity.

As someone deeply interested in microbiology, standing in a lab is never just about experiments. It’s about legacy. Every culture plate, every slide under the microscope carries the quiet influence of giants who believed that science could transform a nation.

From the light-scattering brilliance of C. V. Raman, the institution-building vision of Homi J. Bhabha, the inspirational leadership of A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, the fearless curiosity of Jagadish Chandra Bose, the cosmic insights of Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, the molecular clarity brought by Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, the mathematical elegance of Manjul Bhargava, to the genetic breakthroughs of Dr. Har Gobind Khorana—their contributions transcend time, borders, and disciplines.

This caricature is a small, heartfelt salute to these legends and a reminder to young researchers like me:
🧬 We don’t just inherit laboratories—we inherit responsibility.

May we continue to ask better questions, pursue science with integrity, and build knowledge that serves humanity.
